Howard ranks in the Top 100 Places to Live!
Money Magazine, published by Time, just released its annual Best Places to Live list, and the Village of Howard ranked No. 40 of the Top 100. The magazine's team considered municipalities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000 and focused on the cost of living, economy, education, housing, crime, convenience, cultural and recreational amenities and overall attractiveness.

The Money Magazine article noted Howard's low unemployment rate, affordable housing, extremely low crime rate, quick commute, family resources and recreational activities as factors that led to the village's ranking. As part of the Howard-Suamico School District, Howard also was credited with having great schools and a high school graduation rate of 92 percent, which is well above the area's average.

Money Magazine noted Howard's growth and strong economy as other attractive features. Howard's current population is 18,556 and medium home price is $152,750. The projected job growth in the village is 4 percent, and the median household income is $60,010.

Howard Village Administrator Paul Evert said the village is much more than the statistics that led to the village ranking in the top half of the Best Places to Live list. The recognition reflects directly on the people who live, work and play in the community, he said.

"Our residents make Howard the friendly and inviting place it is," he said. "Our community is strong, and we couldn't be prouder."

It's Fire Prevention Week!

The theme for this year's Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8-14 is "Every Second Counts; Plan 2 Ways Out!" Working smoke alarms, which cut the chances of dying in a house fire in half, are a family's first indication of a fire. But once that alarm sounds, a fire can spread quickly, leaving only a minute or two to escape, according to the National Fire Protection Association. That's why it's so important to have an escape plan and practice it using different ways out of the house.

The National Safety Council provides the following tips to keep your home safe from fire:
  • Install both types of smoke alarms (ionization and photoelectric) and carbon monoxide alarms, and change the batteries at least once a year in these devices.
  • Plan and practice an escape route and agree on a meeting place outside of your home; be prepared to assist young children, family members with special needs and pets.
  • Know two ways out of every room in the home.
  • Learn how to use your fire extinguisher.
  • If your clothes catch on fire, stop, drop and roll.
  • When evacuating, if door handles are hot, pick an alternate route.
  • Leave your house and call for help; do not go back to help someone else.

Fall leaf collection is underway!

Fall leaf collection has started, and the Public Works Department offers residents the following reminders to make sure leaves are collected quickly and efficiently:
  • Please do NOT rake leaves into the street. This sends dangerous levels of algae and contaminants into our waterways, clogs storm sewers, and also is a hazard for children.
  • Bagged leaves and grass will not be collected. Simply rake foliage to the curb so the vacuum machine easily can suck up the yard waste.
  • Do not commingle sticks, branches, pumpkins and other solid objects, which can damage the hose and equipment.
  • Brush pickup is done using separate machinery on Tuesdays only and must be scheduled by calling the Public Works office at (920) 434-4060 by noon on Monday.
  • For other important reminders and to be sure your leaves are collected in a timely manner, please click here.
