Magical Marketplace is Tomorrow
 Get a head start on your holiday shopping at our 18th Annual Magical Marketplace next Friday, November 18, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Shop for art, jewelry, baked goods, stationery, clothing, baby gifts, holiday goodies, and much more from over 80 vendors. Many of your favorite vendors will be joining us and we will also welcome 17 new vendors! Boxed lunches are available for $7. Proceeds from the sale this year will benefit the Mitchell's Place Scholarship Fund.

 Come Share a Bear This Sunday
All children are asked to bring a new teddy bear to the 8:30 am or 11:00 am worship service this Sunday, November 20, for our Fall Mission Project. Our teddy bears will be blessed by our ministers before they are donated to children at Children's Harbor and the YMCA. If you have any questions, contact Anne Strozier ([email protected]).

 Join Us for Sunday Evening Worship
We are thrilled to have Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett with us this Sunday at 5:00 pm in the Chapel. She will be preaching on "Singing God's Song." Come and enjoy familiar hymns, warm fellowship, and a strong message from our Bishop. Also, join us on November 27 when Butch Williams will preach.

The Real Stories of the Pilgrims
Most of us have dressed the part of the Pilgrim in a school play, but who were these 100 or so people who crossed the Atlantic on a boat with only 1,700 square feet of living space, who dressed awkwardly, and interacted with the Native Americans? Rev. Kipp McClurg will share their history this Sunday, November 20, at 9:45 am, in Tyson Hall. |

 Angel Tree
Angels will be on the tree outside of Tyson Hall this Sunday, November 20, and will also be on trees in the Narthex and the Lighthouse lobby after Thanksgiving. This year's partners are Inglenook and South Hampton K-8 schools, Dream Garden, Aid to Inmate Mothers, and Piper Place. Select an angel and help a child in need have a wonderful Christmas morning! Most of the gifts are about $35, although some children requested larger items, like bicycles. Please return the unwrapped gift, with the angel attached, to the front office by Sunday, December 11.  Youth Madrigal Dinner
Don't miss our feasting and hilarity, our music and our revelry at our 2nd VHUMC Madrigal Dinner on Sunday, November 27, in Tyson Hall. Our New Life Singers (youth choir) will be in full costume and full of clever comedy as we visit a 16th century castle for food, fun, and frolicking.  It Takes a Village
First Light is a women's and children's shelter downtown and one of our long time mission partners. For the last few months, the shelter has been at full capacity and there are people waiting for a bed or a place to sleep. In addition to our financial support, VHUMC helps First Light in many ways including collecting toiletries and winter items, providing dinners, and spending the night as helpers at the shelter.
Helen Dennis and Kiley Watson are our leaders in coordinating volunteer help. Helen is our meal coordinator for First Light. It only takes about 3-4 people to serve and prepare the dinner and the women and children are so very appreciative. Sunday School classes or individuals that are interested in serving dinner, please contact Helen Dennis ([email protected] / 823-9057). Kiley organizes the overnight volunteers. She schedules these opportunities for once or twice a month and she would love to add you to her list. For more information about being an overnight volunteer, please contact Kiley Watson ([email protected]).
As the new year approaches, and we start thinking of what we will do and where we will serve in 2017, we hope you will prayerfully consider an opportunity to serve at First Light.

 Family Nativity Workshop
Take time as a family from the busyness of this season to focus on the great celebration of our Savior's birth. We are assembling all the materials for your family to construct a nativity set for each of your children with hopes that it will not only decorate your home, but create special memories this Christmas. Join us on Wednesday, November 30, at 6:00 pm, in the Fellowship Hall for a special family time together. Registration is $5 per child, and you can register online at www.vhumc.org.  Come Run With Us
Lace up your running shoes, grab a friend, and join the VHUMC Runners for a run during the Mercedes Marathon Weekend. Runners from the group will be participating in the 5-person marathon relay and half marathon on Sunday, February 12th. Not interested in running a half marathon? Join or form a marathon relay team that includes two 5K legs (3.1 miles), two 10K legs (6.2 miles) and one 12K leg (8 miles). Training for the marathon relay and half marathon will begin this Monday, November 21. Training plans, support, and group runs will be provided to each runner.  Magic City Nutcracker
Returning for its fourth year, the Magic City Nutcracker will delight children and adults alike with this heartwarming holiday tale. This community and volunteer based cast and crew create an annual magical event for Birmingham families to enjoy. Performance dates are Friday-Sunday, December 2-4. Tickets are $15 for regular seating and $25 for preferred seating.
This year the production is benefitting Hearts Cry, Casa Paraiso. This ministry is building the very first orphanage in the country of Panama that is specifically designed for special needs children. All proceeds from the ornament sale in the lobby will go directly to the building fund.

 Every Girl Fitness Mini Session
Feel great and stay in shape with Every Girl Fitness! Join us on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 7:00 pm as we stay in shape this holiday season. The December mini session begins Monday, November 28, and runs through Wednesday, December 14th. The cost is $45/person for the entire three-weeks. Want to train for free? Who is Baby Jesus?
Each year we celebrate the birth of Jesus, the infant of Mary. But who is Jesus and what does his birth really mean? Using the Disciple Bible curriculum, the pastoral staff will try to answer that question in a new four-week series taught both on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. Join us Sundays at 10:00 am, in Tyson Hall, starting on November 27; or on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm, in room 202, starting November 30 to learn about our God incarnate in Jesus Christ. |

 November Memory Verse
Our 1st - 5th graders have a new memory verse for November. It is, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long" -Psalm 23:6. They can recite the verse before or after Sunday School in the sensory room (next door to the elementary office) for a sweet treat and a chance to win a bike at the end of the school year! |
Serve on a Care & Support Team
 As we approach the end of the year, how can you give some of your time to share in ministry to others? Can you give a few hours a month to extend loving care and encouragement? There are many ways you can give of your time and talents to help others each month. Two of our current needs are:
- TLC Visitation Ministry - join others in visiting those who are unable to fully engage in the life and ministries of VHUMC.
- Sacred Connections Special Worship Service - join our team of volunteers who assist this monthly service for those experiencing memory loss and mobility limitation issues.

It's Christmas Time All Over the World
Combining traditional carols with classical and contemporary favorites, Nancy Hornsby will be presenting a Christmas music lesson "It's Christmas Time All Over the World" on Sunday, December 11, at 10:00 am, in the Chapel. Singing the songs of other traditions and hearing their customs and poetry, we will join the world-wide celebration and also be in prayer for our brothers and sisters around the world. |
Outreach Corner
Ways to Serve this Thanksgiving
This year during the Thanksgiving week holiday, VHUMC is blessed to be the host church for our Family Promise families. There are many ways you and your family, Sunday School class, or close friends can help serve together over this holiday:
- Volunteer for a couple of hours on Thanksgiving Day. We need volunteers from 11 am - 5 pm
- Dinner is needed on Friday night.
- Lunches are needed on Wednesday and Friday.
- Donate new or gently used towels.
One of our greatest gifts as southerners is our hospitality, so let's show these families some true "southern hospitality" over the Thanksgiving holiday. Contact Rachael Hayes ([email protected]) if you can help or if you have questions.
Picture Frames Needed
We are collecting 5x7, 4x6, and wallet-sized picture frames for homeless families in the Birmingham area who will be recipients of free holiday portraits this Christmas. The International Help-Portrait project was started in 2008 by celebrity photographer Jeremy Coward to give those who otherwise couldn't afford professional photographs the chance to have a family memento. Local photographers, makeup artists and editors will donate their time and talents to provide photos for residents of area shelters including First Light, Family Promise, Interfaith Hospitality House, and Jessie's Place. Collection boxes will be in the church office, by the Chapel, and outside Tyson Hall through December 2.
Help Yourself While Helping Someone
Ever wonder how all the Christmas presents will get wrapped each year? After hours of shopping, baking, cooking, and preparing for our normal Christmas traditions, then you still need all the gifts wrapped for family and friends. This year plan to visit the Gift Wrap Booth, at Brookwood Mall, on December 12 and December 19, during mall hours and let our very own VHUMC volunteers wrap your presents for you. Proceeds from the gift wrap help our mission partner, Family Promise.
 Food Pantry
Thanks to our Wednesday night children for the decorated bags filled with food for our families. Thanks also to West and Central Elementary schools for their wonderful food drives this week!
