CVA needs your help with our legal defense fund!
CVA continues to advocate for protection of our valley way of life. In July, CVA prevailed in its appeal of Hilltop Ranch's effort to have special events at its residential property. CVA retained legal counsel Molly Erickson of Stamp/Erickson to help get that important win before the County Planning Commission.
Now Hilltop Ranch has appealed the issue to the County Board of Supervisors. CVA needs continued legal representation to fight this latest effort. The incursion of special events into our low density residential areas must be stopped, at Hilltop Ranch and elsewhere in our valley. Please help CVA with this challenge.

Our next program features Dr. Pablo Davanso from Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula's Behavioral Health Services division. Dr Davanso will teach us about bipolar disorder, a frequently stigmatizing illness of young adults that affects nearly 3% of the population of the United States, and is linked to many other medical and sociological challenges. Area Residents Weigh in on
Proposed Uses and Development
of Palo Corona Regional Park
At an October 5th workshop at Rancho Cañada, about 130 area residents were polled about possible uses for the park, which will consist of most of the former Rancho Cañada Golf Course and the existing Palo Corona Park.
Of the choices presented, most participants favored restoration, trails, and educational activities. There was also considerable support for a fenced area for off leash canine recreation and socialization.
The Regional Park district has established a web site on which it intends to update planning for the park and publish results of its surveys - palocorona.org. As of this writing, results of the October 5th workshop haven't been published.

Val Verde Development Denied
On September 12, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a motion of intent to deny the Carmel Rio Road subdivision. The supervisors agreed with CVA and the neighboring residents and businesses that the subdivision project does not fit the site or the county plans.
We thank Supervisor Jane Parker for making the motion to deny, and to Supervisor John Phillips for seconding the motion, and for their perceptive comments about problems with the project.
We also thank Supervisors Mary Adams, Simon Salinas, and Luis Alejo for voting for the motion. The final resolution of denial is scheduled for adoption on the Supervisors' October 10 agenda.

Short-Term Rentals in Carmel Valley
The county is searching for answers to the complicated questions surrounding the issue. Among those being considered are: How should the difference between owner-occupied and absentee-owner properties be dealt with? Should there be limits on how many days a unit could be rented? What effects are short-term rentals having on overall housing market prices and on affordable long-term rentals?
It is very important that residents of Carmel Valley express their thoughts to the Planning Commissioners.

Rancho Cañada Opening Brief
Filed in Superior Court
The hearing has been moved from October 6, 2017 to January 26, 2018. The hearing will be in Department 1 of the Salinas Courthouse located at 240 Church Street. That is the new building adjacent to the County Government Building. (Some of you may have reported to jury duty in the basement.). Department 1 is on the top floor; there is an elevator. The Hon. Lydia M. Villarreal is the judge.

most successful community organizations in Monterey County. We are entirely volunteer, with no paid employees. Our mission is to defend the beauty, resources and rural character of our beautiful valley. We do that by working with residents, businesses, and government.
CVA was instrumental in the adoption of the Carmel Valley Master Plan and recently settled a lawsuit with Monterey County regarding traffic measurement and capping future development on very favorable terms for our valley.
