Dear Reading Power Friends,
Fall is an exciting time at Reading Power! Almost 200 tutors started the school year eager to connect with students, and our students came ready to learn and with great promise. By winter break the magic will happen, and our students' fluency will take off as they become problem solvers with the support of their tutors.
This year our programs are fully implemented in four schools. In North Chicago, our kindergarten, first and second grade programs are up and running at North and Forrestal Schools, and our new prekindergarten program is off to a great start at Green Bay Early Childhood Center. In Zion, our first and second grade programs are offered at Beulah Park School.
Our students have great potential but suffer from an opportunity gap. In the districts we serve, less than ten percent of the student population meet third grade reading standards. The literacy interventions that Reading Power provides, through our research-based curricula, can help close that gap.
Our vital programs are offered at no charge to the districts we serve. To date, we are honored to have received grants from The Lake County Community Foundation for our Zion program, and the AbbVie Foundation for our North School and Green Bay prekindergarten programs. We also received funding from the Kiwanis Club of Lake Bluff & Lake Forest to support our mission.
We appreciate the generosity of everyone from our Reading Power family. We couldn't give the gift of literacy without you! At the same time, we ask you to open your hearts even more to keep our students and Reading Power in your giving plans as the holidays and year end approach. Thank you to our many volunteers, donors, supporters, partners, and friends. You make Reading Power possible each year!

Mission Statement
Reading Power is a literacy tutoring program serving low-achieving children attending elementary schools. Our mission is to accelerate children's literacy learning and to develop in them a love of reading and writing. We accomplish this goal through an independent tutoring program working in partnership with schools. We believe that all children deserve to reach their intellectual potential.

Tutors Read With, Not To, Children
in the New Prekindergarten Program
|
25 students in 7 classrooms - w
e are thrilled about our prekindergarten
launch at Green Bay Early Childhood Center in North Chicago!
I
n our new program, reading with, and not to, children is the key to enriched reading with our young, 3-5 year old students. By adding guidance and fun to our one-to-one reading time, each child's unique comments and ideas are heard and expanded upon by our attentive and
enthusiastic tutors, creating a dynamic, interactive reading experience. Being able to contribute to a child's early exposure to books in such a positive way is very worthwhile and rewarding. Stay tuned for more updates!

Tutors Keep Learning at Daily "Table Meetings"
|
Daily "table meetings", led by our professional staff, provide ongoing training for our nearly 200 volunteer tutors. Program wide, Reading Power holds 22 table meetings weekly. Tutors and staff are engaged by these rich discussions and our students benefit directly. Here, North School Site Coordinator Marion Schmidt (2nd from left) leads her daily table meeting for our 1st and 2nd grade program.

A big thank you to everyone who participated in our Bake 425° fundraiser!
Because of your love of Reading Power, and pizza, our fundraiser was a great success. All funds raised will go directly to support our programs. We are grateful to Bake 425° for their generosity.
