LAAC in Action
Disaster Preparedness for Legal Aid Attorneys

In light of the fires in Northern and Southern California, LAAC is working with local legal aid organizations to make sure we are sharing the most helpful information with the public through LawHelpCA. We also want to make sure our members feel supported as everyone plans for current and future disasters.

At a glance benefits your clients might be eligible for:
  • disaster CalFresh (after the state requests authority for it)
  • replacement CalFresh (additional CalFresh benefits to replace items destroyed by a disaster)
  • expedited CalFresh (getting CalFresh within 3 business days)
  • immediate need CalWORKs
  • CalWORKs homeless assistance (disaster is an exception to the once per year limit on homeless assistance)
  • CalWORKs non-recurring special needs (which can include actual cost of replacing item, repairs to home, moving and storage costs),
  • good cause for Welfare-to-Work issues caused by disasters.
  • Disaster unemployment Insurance
You can find more resources on disaster assistance and recovery at LawHelpCA.org under "Find Legal Information For Your Issue". We also launched a new disaster relief button under "Search for Legal Help" to take you to our latest resources on disaster relief.

Please contact David Latt ( [email protected]) if you would like to add any useful resources for disaster assistance.

Free Disaster Preparedness Trainings from PLI

Are you looking for resources for your staff and volunteers to prepare for the current and next disaster? Check out PLI's disaster preparedness training on legal aid issues. Survivors of these fires will need help to resolve legal issues related to the disaster.  In the FREE program, you will learn about the most common post-disaster legal issues, and how to provide brief phone assistance to disaster legal helpline callers, in-person assistance through legal services help desks located at Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs), or pro bono representation. [Note that this training pre-dates the 2016 law providing additional protections with fair practices standards for insurance providers.]

PLI has great resources, find them here and here.
The NEW LawHelpCA.org is here!

The new  LawHelpCA.org  is now live. LawHelpCA is California's statewide resource and referral website for Californians with legal needs and questions.  LAAC staffs the site and makes sure we give accurate legal information and helpful referrals to your programs.

In our effort to increase language access, you can now browse the new site in six languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, Mandarin, Tagalog and Russian! In addition to English, we also have hundreds of resources in Spanish, Mandarin, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Korean, Russian, and Arabic.

Note that the site has been machine-translated into these languages, and we are currently working with volunteers to correct any wrong or confusing translations. Please do not hesitate to let us know if you see a strange translation!

Please contact our new Program Associate David Latt ( [email protected]), if you have any questions, feedback, or have any additional resources/ content you think we should share on LawHelpCA.org.

Follow us on  Twitter and  Facebook to get updates on the latest resources.
