Measure G: Long-term project making significant progress

In an exciting time for the Folsom community, Measure G has been making significant progress. Many of the improvements have already been completed, while some are yet to begin.

Passed in November 2014, Measure G is a $195 million voter-approved bond initiative that funds the construction, renovation, and modernization of FCUSD schools in Folsom. The overall goal of Measure G is to provide a modern and safe classroom environment that will support academic instruction, while enhancing the overall community.

NBC Sports presents $20,000 to Mr. Waldo at Folsom Middle
The NBC Sports Bay Area team visited Folsom Middle School  on Oct. 6 to present engineering teacher Dale Waldo with a $20,000 check for being their All-Star Teacher Award 2017 winner. 

The check presented to Waldo for Folsom Middle School was sponsored by NBC Sports and Provident Credit Union. The presentation was featured on The Happy Hour Show on Oct. 6 that is on the NBC Sports channel. Watch the live presentation!

The school plans on using the funds towards expanding STEAM educational opportunities, something Waldo is passionate about as the school's Project Lead the Way Teacher

Waldo was originally announced the winning teacher at the Giants vs. Rockies game on June 28, 2017. He was one of five finalists honored during a ceremony at AT&T ballpark in San Francisco.

Waldo has been a teacher for FCUSD since 2001, at W.E. Mitchell Middle School for 13 years and is in his fourth year of teaching at Folsom Middle School.  
Cordova High students honored at American Legion Awards
Cordova High students D'Andre Brown and Tyler Jenkins were honored as the 2017 Boys State representatives at the American Legion Post 709 Awards Dinner.

Boys State is an annual event sponsored by the American Legion where junior delegates from all over California meet at Sac State to set up mock cities and government.

Brown and Jenkins were selected by the American Legion Post 709 because of their leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty, and service to their school and community. 

Brown is in the IB Diploma Programme, and is serving as President of the IB Society club on campus at Cordova High. He is the senior representative for the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and is involved in the Interact club, basketball and track. 

Jenkins is the ASB Vice President, FFA President and PTSA Secretary and has taken honors and IB diploma classes.


Assemblyman visits Folsom Hills to explore STEM program
Assemblyman Kevin Kiley visited Folsom Hills Elementary on Oct. 6 to see what STEM education looks like in K-5 education. 

Kiley toured various classrooms with Principal Shawn Lundberg to observe STEM learning activities. He got to see Mrs. Baciocco's Kindergartners exploring human body organs, Mrs. Kirk's first graders using iPads to explore animal adaptations, Mrs. Bjork's 2nd graders doing an "unplugged" computer science programming activity and Mrs. Ducat's 5th graders engaging in infection detection simulations.

Kiley represents the Sixth Assembly District, which includes Placer, Sacramento, and El Dorado counties.

Runway 17 Fashion Show to benefit Folsom's Parks & Rec. inclusion project

 
You're invited!  The Runway 17 project was created out of the need of providing inclusion to recreational opportunities to children with disabilities in the community.  

The project will allow the City of Folsom to recruit and train counselors to support children with a variety of special needs, so they can participate in the same programs as their friends without disabilities.

The event will feature a runway show, auction, raffle, and much more! 

Children of all abilities will participate.  

Event Date: Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017
 
Time: 2 -5 p.m.
 
Location:  Folsom Community Center
52 Natoma Street, Folsom.
 
Tickets are $30 during the early bird period and $35 afterwards.

Parent Forum: How to protect your child from the dangers of the internet
 
Attention: Folsom Middle and Sutter Middle School families! Join us on Wed. Oct. 18 for our Parent Internet Safety Forum. 
 
Location: Folsom Middle  multi-purpose room

Presentation is from 6-7:30 p.m. 
 
Speakers: Folsom Police, Marriage and Family Therapist, Kelly Richardson, and Folsom Cordova USD representatives.
 

Parents will learn: 

  • Social media trends with middle school students in Folsom
  • How to protect your children from cyber bullying and texting.
  • The latest trends in cyber crimes against children.
  • Skills to parent teens in the internet age
  • The legal and school district ramifications for children who inappropriately use the internet and much more!

Board of Education: Oct. 5, 2017

The FCUSD Board of Education held its regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. in the Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova.
 
Agenda items included:
  • Approve 2017-18 Application for Waiver of Education Code 48661(a): Co-Location of Prospect Community Day School and KHS on the Kinney High School Campus 
  • Approve the Negotiated Agreements with the FCEA and the Public Disclosure in Accordance with AB 1200 for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018
  • Approve The New Salary Schedules For Management and Confidential Positions with the  FCLA and the Public Disclosure.
