As Halloween approaches, we have frightful times in Washington D.C. in regards to children. Congress has allowed the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to expire which means millions of children with lose their healthcare by the end of the year. AAP is advocating from all angles to get Congress to pass new legislation to renew CHIP. AAP will be having another Day of Action on October 11, on which Pediatricians will be asked to call their members of Congress urging them to renew CHIP. The AAP continues to advocate for legislation to protect the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
On a different note, the Chapter is involved in a CQN Immunizations Project in which Pediatric Practices seek to improve the immunization rates of children 19 to 35 month old. We have ten Pediatric Practices participating in the project in which they will receive 50 MOC Part 2 credit in addition to improving immunization rates. This project utilizes Quality Improvement tools to help reduce immunization missed opportunities and develop a reminder/recall system. One QI tool is utilizing Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycles. PDSA cycles allow practices to identify a barrier and implement a rapid change cycle. From a PDSA cycle, the practice can determine if a proposed intervention was successful or needs to be modified. In which case, the proposed intervention can be implemented or another PDSA cycle is started. Since starting this project, the overall Chapter 2 missed opportunity rate has decreased from 55% to 37%. Overall immunization coverage rates have increased from 58% to 63%.
The AAP National Conference and Exhibition was held in Chicago for the first time. One of our own Chapter Members, Mona Patel, received the Calvin C.J. Sia Community Pediatrics Medical Home Leadership and Advocacy Award. This is the second year in a row that a member of our chapter has a prestigious award from the Council on Community Pediatrics. Congratulations Mona!
Voting is underway for our next (National) AAP President so I urge you to please vote.
Finally, the Chapter has started a series of Town Hall Meetings on Developmental Screening in conjunction with all the Regional Centers in Los Angeles County and First 5 Los Angeles. These meetings are an excellent way for Pediatricians to connect with resources in their local area. These meeting are free and a great way to network with other Pediatricians - so please joins us.

Go The Extra Mile: A Resident's Experience at the 2017 AAP NCE

Being a pediatric resident is rarely glamorous. From being awake for 30 hours straight with no shower access to ending every conversation with "...but let me check with my attending first," even the strongest of heart can feel worn out. However, every September, there is a light at the end of this long tunnel. The event of the season, the place to see and be seen, the Grammy equivalent of academic pediatrics, is finally here. Yes, I am talking about the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition.
While some of my above statements may have been in jest, as a pediatric resident, the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference and Exhibition, or AAP NCE for short, is truly the event of the season. Whether you're headed to Chicago to attend plenary sessions, present a poster, or pick up more free tote bags at the Exhibition Hall than can fit in your carry-on, there are a plethora of things to see and do. A few weeks ago, I packed my bags for The Windy City with another aim in mind - to talk about how much I, and my colleagues, love vaccines.

As a district representative for my residency program, I get to be a part of the annual resolution debate for the Section on Pediatric Trainees (SOPT.) This year was even more exciting - and nerve-wracking - as we debated a resolution that I had helped author with two of my co-residents and our faculty sponsor (shout out to Nora Pfaff, Chelsea Garnett and Susan Wu!) After being part of a multi-year research project aiming to improve Human papillomavirus vaccine rates by giving the vaccine to inpatients at our hospital, we realized how hard it is to navigate the Vaccines for Children system, vaccine funding, and reimbursements in general. Sure, we had been able to embark on our project by receiving a generous grant from the Krieger Foundation, but what would happen when we graduated and that grant no longer existed? Thus our resolution was born, which aims to improve vaccination rates by universal access to vaccines, and we had to look no further than Washington, Indiana, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island and Vermont to find a means to achieving this, as these states already operate under a universal purchase model for childhood vaccines. Our resolution was adopted for SOPT sponsorship at the AAP NCE, leading to a great sigh of relief on my part, and a hope that one day this will be able to make a real impact.
My second and final day at the conference was filled with another novel experience, presenting our Human papillomavirus vaccine research at the Section on Hospital Medicine poster session. Hearing the supportive comments by peers and more-practiced clinicians was rejuvenating, and the highlight of the session was having someone take a picture of our poster to tweet about it (if you were there, you'll know that becoming a "tweetiatrician" is all the rage right now.) So, from pediatric resident to policy change advocate to social media superstar back to pediatric resident all in one weekend, I can say that this year's AAP NCE definitely lived up to the hype, and I can't wait to do it all again in Orlando next year.

The first Town Hall in its series, Best Practices in Developmental Screening - An Inside Look, held in Pomona on October 5th was an overwhelming success. In attendance were primary care pediatricians, and occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech language pathologists from both private practice and Regional Center staff. Marwa Moustafa, MD presented her topic, "Developmental Screening and Early Detection for Clinicians". Larry Yin, MD, MSPH, FAAP provided additional insight on the topic. Furthermore, three staff members from the Pomona/San Gabriel Regional Center presented supporting topics. "It was extremely helpful for us pediatricians to hear the perspective of other disciplines who are involved in the identification of new cases and their techniques of intervention" - Glenn Miya, MD, FAAP.

Best Practices in Developmental Screening - Town Halls
An inside look, from the systematic approach of Regional Center clinicians and therapists, to strategies used by local pediatricians. Funded by First 5 LA.
This series of events in Los Angeles County are an opportunity for pediatricians to connect face to face with clinicians and staff from each of the six Regional Centers. In a multidisciplinary approach, attendees will learn best practices in developmental screening and early detection of autism spectrum disorders, and engage with Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists.
Representatives from Los Angeles Unified School District will address the services provided once a child enters the public school system.
On the schedule are events covering the San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center, North Los Angeles Regional Center (Both San Fernando and Antelope Valleys), and Westside Regional Center. Events to include Eastern LA, Lanterman, Harbor and South Central LA Regional Centers will begin in January.
