Local Update
Minneapolis City Council Backs Off Plastic Bag Fee

From the StarTribune, Emma Nelson, August 18, 2017

"Minneapolis shoppers won't have to pay for bags at checkouts after all. The City Council declined to vote on an ordinance Friday that would attach a 5-cent fee to bags that retailers provide, instead asking city staff to come back with a recommendation for reducing plastic waste.

City Council President Barb Johnson proposed the change - which did not specify when staff have to report back to the council - citing concerns from residents and small business owners. The council has passed or implemented several ordinances this year that affect local businesses, from mandatory paid sick leave and the $15 minimum wage to a restriction on menthol tobacco sales.

"I think it's important to understand what we are doing ... to small businesses in this city, which is apparently trying to drive them out," Johnson said. "And it's not right. It's not fair."

Wage
First Automatic Increase: Minnesota's Minimum Wage Goes Up 15 Cents On January 1, 2018

From WCCO TV, August 17, 2017

"Minnesota's minimum wage for most large employers will increase to $9.65 an hour in 2018.

The state announced next year's minimum wage on Thursday based upon inflation. It's the first annual increase stemming from a 2014 minimum wage hike that gradually increased the state's floor wage to $9.50 hourly by 2016. Other smaller employers will pay at least $7.87 hourly, up from $7.75

The modest raise taking effect Jan. 1 is the first inflation-adjusted increase. But Republicans have suggested they'd like to do away with those annual hikes, calling it "government on autopilot."

Study: Retail Automation Market Worth $18.9B By 2023

From the Retail Dive, Dan O'Shea, August 21, 2017

"The retail automation market is expected to be worth more than $18.9 billion by 2023, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of more than 10.9% between this year and 2023, according to new market research from Research and Markets.

The new report states that the imminent market growth is being "propelled by the growing deployment of self-automated technologies" - such as RFID and others - by retailers like supermarkets, hypermarkets and single item stores.

Asia-Pacific is expected to be the international region with the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The retail automation market in APAC is expected to grow significantly there, especially in China, India and Japan, because of factors such as rising employee wages and overall growth in employment, the research states. These factors drive the consumption of retail products, which is ultimately expected to boost the retail automation market in this region.."
