"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity."

Immanuel Barnes & Noble Book Fair

SAT., OCT. 14, 10 AM-1 PM
Barnes and Noble, 102 Commons Dr., Geneva, is hosting the Immanuel book fair, with 15 percent of most purchases going to Immanuel Lutheran School when shoppers mention the school at checkout.

The activities Immanuel has planned for Oct. 14 include school principal Donna Laughlin, preschool teacher Terri Holmes, and fourth grade teacher Bill Moser reading aloud to the children. Teacher Mary Wert will share some great hands-on STEM activities with anyone who would like to join in the learning and fun. Travis Thrasher will also be at the book fair. Travis is a former ILS parent and the bestselling author of more than thirty works of fiction in a variety of genres. He’s written novels that have crossed the spectrum between love stories and supernatural thrillers. His inspirational stories have included collaborations with filmmakers, musicians, and pastors. He’s also helped write memoirs and self-help books.

ILS teachers have created Wish Lists and families and friends are invited to purchase books from the list as gifts to the classroom. These books will be marked with a personalized book plate to honor the book's donor.

Immanuel volunteers will be at the fair to provide gift wrapping during the book fair. Wrapping is free, but free will offerings are being accepted for the Investing in Discipleship campaign at Immanuel. Along with the in-store book fair, an online book fair will be from Oct. 14-19. To take part in the online book fair, visit barnesandnoble.com/h/bookfairs  and use the book fair ID number 12212791.
ILS Cross Country Teams Return to State Meet

The 25-member Immanuel Cross Country teams return to the Illinois Lutheran State Meet this weekend for the fifth year in a row. In previous contests, Immanuel runners have earned State Champion (girls, 2014), State Runner Up (girls, 2013 and 2015), fifth place (girls, 2016), and seventh place (boys, 2014). Coaches Dale Wert, Beth Polizzotto, and Matt Hager have been very pleased with the power the teams has displayed this year, especially in light of the unseasonably warm temperatures throughout most of this fall, which made consistent practice and conditioning more of a challenge. Their goal for this meet is for the athletes to do their best and to qualify for the National Meet, which will be held at Concordia University-Wisconsin next weekend. Go Eagles!

Next Week in The Story
The Story is a compilation of the stories, poems, and teachings of the Bible condensed into accessible chapters. These chapters allow the reader to witness Bible events in the order in which they occurred. Each weekend at Immanuel during the 2017 2018 ministry year, a new chapter of The Story is introduced at worship. At Sunday School, Sunday adult Bible study, and during the week at Immanuel Lutheran School in religion classes and weekday Bible studies, children and adults are delving into that same chapter; developing together as
Disciples of Christ. This book is available outside the church office for $5. A limited number of copies are available.
Chapter 6: Wandering

NUM. 10–14; 20–21; 25; 27
DEUT. 1–2; 4; 6; 8–9; 29–32; and 34
Life gets messy and complicated and people need a vision and guidelines, as well as healthy relationships to help them live into their potential. So it is with the People of God as Israel begins to grow into their identity. Chapter 6 of The Story focuses on what living into one's identity is about, especially in terms of living into the Covenant with God. With Wandering, Chapter 6 of The Story , exploration of the first five books of the Old Testament--The Pentateuch (Greek for “five scrolls”) is finished. Perhaps the best words to describe this period of Israel’s development it is adolescence.
