Candidates for 9 September Cumberland Council Election announced
Candidates for the Cumberland Council Election on Saturday 9 September have been announced by the NSW Electoral Commission. This is the first time residents have the opportunity to vote for who will represent them as part of the new Cumberland Council.
The new Cumberland Council area is made up of five wards, namely: Granville, Greystanes, Regents Park, South Granville and Wentworthville (see map below).
Residents will be voting for three Councillors to represent them from each ward and can find out more about their respective candidates at
candidates.elections.nsw.gov.au.
Voting is compulsory for everyone enrolled in the Cumberland Council area.

The Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival is underway!
Gates opened for the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival last Friday with Sydneysiders flooding in to see the stunning Sakura in full bloom.

book online to avoid the queues and guarantee entry into the Festival. Remember: parking is limited at Auburn Botanic Gardens.
FREE shuttle buses now operate daily between 9.00am and 5.00pm from Auburn Train Station and the Susan Street Car Park exit.
The Cherry Blossoms are running to clockwork - in full bloom just as the 2017 Festival kicks off.
Fourth basketball court at Wyatt Park in the wings
Council has agreed in principle with the Parramatta Basketball Association (PBA)
to enter into a new 20 year lease for the basketball facilities at Wyatt Park, Lidcombe. PBA has occupied the site since the early 1970's and their existing 21 year lease expires in December 2021.
The agreement is dependent on the approval from Crown Lands for the construction of a fourth basketball court, which Council fully supports. Cumberland Council would bear the full cost of the $3.5 million upgrade if approved, as part of its commitment to work with sporting associations to provide great indoor recreational facilities.

New stadium slated for Granville Park
The existing sporting facilities at Granville Park would become unrecognisable under a bold plan to replace the outdated structure along Montrose Avenue with a new, state-of-the art pavilion including major upgrades to the playing fields estimated to cost $9 million.
Council has released early concept work that shows a modern facility boasting ample elevated seating for a better crowd experience, four change rooms for male and female athletes, strength and conditioning gym and separate rooms for time keepers and referees. Learn more

Over $1m for community support in Cumberland's first ClubGRANTS Scheme
55 local organisations were awarded grant funding totaling
$1,148,931.13 for projects that will improve the living standards of low income and disadvantaged people. The Clubs for Cumberland ClubGRANTS Scheme is funded by the NSW Government and encourages clubs to give back to their community at a grassroots level by allowing those with gaming machine profits over $1 million to apply for a tax rebate of 1.85 per cent. The rebate is then used to provide grants to not-for-profit community organisations.
Flags at half mast for "golden girl" Betty Cuthbert
Cumberland Council marked the passing of Merrylands born sporting icon Elizabeth "Betty" Cuthbert by lowering flags to half-mast at all civic buildings on Tuesday 8 August.
The daughter of local nursery owners was dubbed Australia's "golden girl" after winning three gold medals at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. She came back from injury to win a fourth gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Cumberland Council General Manager Malcolm Ryan said the four times gold medallist was an inspiration to all Australians for her example on and off the track.
"Betty Cuthbert was defined by her commitment to excellence, generosity towards others and tenacity in the face of setback. Her death is not only a loss to Cumberland but all of Australia."
