FEDERAL WAY CARES FOR KIDS
2nd Annual Holiday Giving Event

Communities In Schools of Federal Way is a part of Federal Way Cares For Kids, a community coalition which coordinates the talents, resources, and skills of local organizations and individuals to maximize support received by kids and families served by Federal Way schools.

We invite our supporters to participate in our second annual Holiday Gift Giving Event, a community-driven initiative to support 1,000 students and their families this holiday season. Families most in-need from every school in the Federal Way School District will be invited by school counselors to come and select new unwrapped presents for their children.  While the parents shop for their kids, the kids will make gifts for their parents at craft stations.

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:
  • Volunteer with us! Federal Way Cares for Kids is looking for 250 volunteers to help make this year's event a success! Registration for volunteers is now open and we would love to have you help! You can register to volunteer at www.fwcaresforkids.org/volunteer. There are many different stations you can volunteer at and times available throughout the day.
    • When: Saturday, December 17th (set-up on Friday the 16th) from 9:00 am-5:30 pm
    • Where: Lakota Middle School (1415 SW 314th St.)
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Museum of Flight Partnership

Through a partnership with the Museum of Flight, our School Outreach Coordinators are introducing students to the world of Aerospace  and other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers.

Our School Outreach Coordinator, Robert Daniel, at Lakota Middle S chool took a group of 23 girls to the Museum for First Time Flyers. At the event the girls got to have VIP access to the museum's education labs where they learned how to perform a safety check on an airplane and  how to design a flight plan. They then got to use the museum's state of the art flight simulation tech nology to simulate flying a plane along the route that they designed. The day was crowned off by each of the girls being paired up with a volunteer pilot to ha ve a 30 minute private flight experience! Some of the pilots even handed over the controls in mid-air so the girls could feel what it is really like to control a plane as it flies through the sky.

Communities In Schools will continue to grow this partnership and utilize the programs that the Museum of Flight has to offer at no cost for underrepresented students. Lakota will be partnering with the Museum of Flight to create an after school program for students, and our School Outreach Coordinator, Pat Perkins, at Illahee Middle School plans to take a group of boys to the Micheal P. Anderson Memorial Aerospace Program in January, where the boys will get to explore STEM career pathways, meet aviation professionals, and build their own aircraft simulation!

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
"Team Glow-Up"

Our School Outreach Coordinator at Kilo Middle School, Ariassa Wilson, has created a program called  "Team Glow-Up"  to encourage students to view school as their job, in which they must work hard to achie ve their goals in order to receive a Glow-Up "paycheck."   The slang term "Glow-Up" means " Going from the bottom, to the top, to the point of disbelief. An incredible transformation ." The program was created from the idea that  when students transform the  lens from which they view education, and its role in their future professional lives, they will see significant changes in their current grades, attendance and behavior.

Each week, students will be rewarded (receive a made-up paycheck worth points) for "glowing-up" in the following areas: attendance, behavior, and coursework. The students will be "paid" (or receive points) based on the work they have done that week to reach their goals in those three areas.

In order to participate, students must create a business name to assume the identity of being a professional business owner, and each week their Glow-Up check will be made out to their business. Students are also expected to  attend monthly "staff  meetings" to discuss their pro gress, monitor their goals, and strengthen their strategies for achieving their goals with the School Outreach Coordinator. Once the students build their savings, they will be able to cash in their points to purchase prizes and special Glow-Up field trips, and be eligible to be featured in the school's glass trophy case as the "Worker of the Week."

CIS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Darius, Thomas Jefferson High School

2016 Communities In Schools of Federal Way Alumni, Darius, stopped by to visit our School Outreach Coordinator, Miss Papaya, at Thomas Jefferson High School, to  update her on how college is going. He will be starting winter quarter in a few weeks and will be focusing on his core classes. He plans to visit Central Washington University soon. His goal is to transfer after two years, so he is exploring different four year college options. For now, he is interested in taking photography as an elective alongside his core classes.
