Independent Living Systems' Josefina Carbonell Speaks at Bipartisan Policy Center's Senior Health and Housing Forum
SPONSOR

Independent Living Systems (ILS) Senior Vice President for Long-Term Care & Nutrition Josefina Carbonell served as a featured speaker at the Bipartisan Policy Center's "Connecting Senior Health and Housing" forum held on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the University of Miami. Carbonell participated in a panel discussion about local innovations being made to help bridge the health care and housing divide.

As the former Assistant Secretary for Aging at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where she directed all operations of the Department's $4.1 billion in federal grant programs to support community-based Long Term Care Services for the elderly, Carbonell has unique insight and perspective on how public and private sectors can collaborate to develop innovative models of senior care. During the discussion, she shed light on the pioneering work ILS is doing to assist people with aging in place in their homes by providing critical Home and Community Based Service (HCBS) options to manage individuals with chronic conditions and functional disabilities. Carbonell also discussed customized patient-centered Care Management practices and proven interventions in the area of fall prevention.

"It was an honor to join such a distinguished group of health care and housing leaders for this incredibly important event," Carbonell said.
Delray Medical Center First to Offer Technologically Advanced Magellan Robotic System in Palm Beach County

Delray Medical Center is the first and only hospital in Palm Beach County to acquire the Magellan Robotic System, which enables physicians to perform complex, yet minimally invasive, endovascular procedures with extraordinary accuracy. Dr. Joseph Ricotta, vascular surgeon, was the first surgeon in the southeastern U.S. to utilize the Magellan robot.

The new physician-controlled Magellan Robotic System, manufactured by Hansen Medical, Inc., is a minimally invasive approach that allows physicians to control and manipulate wires and catheters that are inserted through a small puncture in the groin from a remote workstation. It is proven to provide safe navigation through small vessels, allow targeted treatments, reduce radiation exposure and produce superior patient outcomes. The sophisticated intravascular robotic platform integrates levels of 3D catheter control with 3D visualization, a combination that provides accuracy and stability to the physician.

"This new system provides a great service to the South Florida community as it gives patients access to state-of-the-art treatment and robotic procedural precision," said Dr. Ricotta, Regional Medical Director for Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy of the Tenet Florida Heart and Vascular Network.
