Welcome back to Akiva!
This past week we had two wonderful visitors in Akiva. Morah Jane Baker returned to Akiva with her niece Ms. Rivi Frankel who is an Akiva alumnus. Ms. Frankel is now a certified tour guide in Jerusalem and teaches at various Seminaries as well. How surprised she was to see Morah Lisa- her kindergarten teacher, who was substituting for Morah Traci that day!  We hope to see you again soon!

Lock Down
Thank you to Calgary Police and the School Safety Division for coming to help us practice at our recent lock down practice. The Officers were impressed by our readiness and gave us helpful suggestions to increase safety and awareness.
December Hot Lunch
Just a reminder that the Hot Lunch order form and payment is due tomorrow.

Please click the links for the order form and calendar.

Town Hall Meeting - November 28
Please join us for our Town Hall Meeting on November 28, 2016 . This is your chance to ask any questions  you may have for the administration. We ask that you send us your questions ahead of a time  to make sure we address them in our presentation. Please see agenda in the attached document.

Please RSVP to Irina Be'eri @ [email protected].

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Chanukah Production
We are looking forward to a great show! Students in kindergarten to grade 9 are asked to bring a white shirt/top to school by December 1.  Please label the shirts with your child's name.

Thank you,
Morah Miller
Dovi's Chessed Corner
The grade 2 class is doing a kindness project in memory of Dovi Sass. They are holding a warm coat drive and collecting clean, gently worn coats of all types and sizes. They will also be collecting winter accessories such as scarves, gloves, mittens and toques. Please drop off any gently used winter clothing to Morah Traci's grade two class and help someone in need stay warm this winter.
Daycare November 24 and 25
Thursday, November 24th is  11:20 dismissal. Please be advised that the daycare requires a notification if your son or daughter will be staying.

Friday, November 25th is a PD day. The fee for this day is $25 for children enrolled in full time daycare, and $45 for children enrolled in full time aftercare. The daycare requires a notification prior to secure your child's spot.

If your child(ren) requires care for these dates, the registration form must be filled out. Please email Morah Laura if you have any questions.
Donating used books for the Book Fair
If you or your children decide that you want to donate your gently used books and magazines, please drop them off at the School office. Mr. Hadden will store the books and magazines until the big event. Please keep this in mind as you are fall cleaning. The grade three students will help sort the materials along with some parent volunteers. Used Book Fair volunteers are needed to help sort, price, and sell books. If you are interested, please contact the Mr. Hadden.
Chanukah Play
All students from Nursery through Grade 9 will be participating in the Chanukah Play which will be on Thursday, December 15 at 6 PM. Please let the office know if your child(ren) will be away during that time.
Science Fair
Grade 5-9 students will be preparing for the school science fair in February and are eligible to enter the City Science Fair in April if they follow the proper procedures. The City Youth Science Fair will take place this year April 19-21 during Pesach Break.

In order to enter the City Science fair, students need to follow the requirements which include using a large trifold.

Mr. Virine who is our Parent Volunteer Coordinator has graciously donated the majority of the cost of the large size trifolds.

Students are required to pay $5 each for the trifolds which can now be purchased in the school office. Please send in $5 to purchase a large size trifold.

Sponsorship Opportunities at Akiva
We are looking for plant donations to place above the lockers to make our space more appealing. Please speak to Morah Orly and Mrs. Mashiah about the type and size of plant you would like to donate.

We are looking for a sponsor to install a filtered water bottle filling station for the students to use to fill their water bottles. The cost is approx. $1500. Partial sponsorships will be appreciated as well.

Would you like to sponsor a school event in honour of a relative or friend?
There are many ways to sponsor activities or events at Akiva.

Here are some ways:
A day of Hot Lunch $150
Holiday Assembly $180
Field Trip for a class $250
Pre-School Snack $50
Library Books $36

A light meal will be provided.

Quick update. As I write this note, our campaign is at $1,755,118 from 1,257 donors. Card for card, we are down 3.6%. We have 296 dollar cards, under $1,000, that we are hoping to close still. So if you have those cards, please work on closing them. Whatever is still open, we hope to close those cards on the 29th, as well, maybe bring in some new donors.

If you can come and call some cards, that would be incredibly helpful.

Please RSVP to me by Thursday, November 24 to let me know if you will be coming so we can make necessary preparations.

Thank you so much!
