Weekly Update

Knowing that tomorrow will be consumed by cooking and prepping for Thursday so I'm sending out the Weekly Update a day early . word_cloud_thanksgiving.jpg

The Center will be closed from 3 PM on Wednesday through to Monday morning. We wish you all a wonderful day with family.

Despite all the foreboding for the future we still live in a country where we can strive for change and if we come together we can "be the change we wish to see in the world" .

The original Thanksgiving came after a year of inconceivable hardship, so let us remember that and be thankful for all that we have. What do you count as your blessings?

For me high on the list is the chance to be part of this incredible community we have built together. Nominally as Director here I am a leader, but each and every family brings support to me as well. That is huge.

I hope that YOU count our Center on your list of blessings and will remember us next Tuesday on Giving Tuesday. Together we can accomplish so much more and it will become even more important in the next few years.

   Have a great week !

Sue

#GIVEITUP4AUTISM

We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, November 29, 2016, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. It's a simple idea. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.

RELATIONSHIP AND SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING SERIES
I n response to multiple requests, HMEA's Autism Resource Central is pleased to announce our new Relationships and Social Skills Training Class.  This is a 12 week class starting on December 6th, 2016 to February 28th, 2017. Class will not be held on December 27th, 2016 due to the holidays. This class will take place on Tuesdays from 5:30pm - 7:30pm.  There will be a break during each class where each participant will be offered 2 slices of pizza and a drink.

This is a structured skills training class that is using,The Relationship Series, by YAI, as its curriculum and will be taught by the Autism Adult Specialist, Dianne Crossley, LICSW.  This series addresses the various types and progression of relationships starting with strangers, acquaintances, 5 ways to know if someone is your friend, dating, how to advance to a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship, and then steps to take towards having  mature respectful, consensual, and responsible sexual relationships.

This entire curriculum is presented on DVD so to utilize a visual and an interactive approach.  The DVDs present scenarios of various types of social situations and allow for group discussion on difficult decisions to be made by the characters depicted in these scenarios.  This class is designed for individuals who express that they would feel comfortable and willing to attend and engage in this type of format.  This group is designed for a maximum of 10 participants.  This class utilizes a psychoeducational approach in which each class builds on information  previously presented.  Associated with this, participants need to commit to attending the class throughout the quarter and can only sign up for the entire 12 weeks. Participants in this group will assist with designing, developing, and planning our large social gathering in the spring.  Participants should also attend and utilize our scheduled social activities as a forum to practice the social skills that are taught in this class.

Dates for Relationships Class:
December  6, 13, & 20th  2016
January  3, 10,17,24, 31st  2017
