Hunger and Homelessness Awareness
Hope@Home

In conjunction with its Hope@Home initiative, Camden National Bank has launched a new promotion aimed at increasing support for local homeless shelters in Maine in honor of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week,  November 12th through November 19th . On  Saturday, November 12th , customers are encouraged to use their debit card to earn money for area shelters. For every two purchases made, the Bank will donate $1 through its Hope@Home program, with a total commitment up to $20,000.

"Since starting our Hope@Home initiative in 2015, we've learned that every little bit, from $1 to $100, can make a big difference in supporting the needs of our local shelters," said Greg Dufour, president and chief executive officer of Camden National Bank. "We've already been impressed with the outpouring of support we've received from our customers and communities, and we wanted to think of another way that we could help provide additional assistance during this important week and this critical time of year."

Dufour continued, "We've had so many customers ask us how they could support Hope@Home even if they weren't in the market to purchase a new home. Although many have taken the time to make direct contributions to their local shelters, we felt like this promotion was a great way for us to broaden the scope and allow more people to get involved and help."

Through the community-based, statewide Hope@Home program, for every home Camden National Bank finances, $100 is donated to a homeless shelter in the community of the new homeowner, and in the homeowner's name. In 2015, Camden National Bank financed 442 new home purchases and raised $44,200 for Maine's homeless shelters, and the program is on track to exceed that amount in 2016. As of September, the Bank had donated over $50,000 through Hope@Home this year.

For more information on Hope@Home or the November 12th promotion, please visit CamdenNational.com/hopeathome.

Our line-up of scientists, historians, journalists, activists, consumers and fishermen will answer the question: How did this happen and what do we do now?

Regulating the Evolution: Marine Policy
Patrick Shepard, Fisheries Policy Associate at
Penobscot East Resource Center

Fisheries policy and conservation have not always been synonymous in our history.  Patrick Shepard walks us through the major turning points in the groundfish regulations and brings us the current crossroad in policy as we plot the future of this historically important fishery.

Consuming the Evolution: A Food Historian's Guide to Seafood
Nancy Harmon Jenkins, Food Historian and Writer

The seafood, we as humans consume, has evolved over time based on the availability of the resource locally and through Trans-Oceanic trading webs, as well as the latest culinary trends.  Food historian Nancy Harmon Jenkins charts the rise and fall of salt fish, sardine on crackers and other seafood favorites from the past, discusses current seafood consumption and predicts future seafood culinary trends.

Sustainably Fishing the Evolution: The Marine Affairs' Perspective
Peter Neill, Director of World Ocean Observatory

Peter Neill has been advocating for the health and sustainability of our oceans through numerous means of communication.  He will discuss the evolution of the scientist-fishery harvester conversation and initiatives by each to address sustainability issues and meet conservation objectives imposed by regulatory bodies.

Sustainably Fishing the Evolution: The Fisherman's Perspective
Glen Libby, Manager of Port Clyde Fresh Catch and
co-author of Caught: time, place, fish.

As a fisherman, Mr. Libby has seen how the technological revolution has impacted how and where fishermen fish over a period of several decades. Not all of these advances were good from a sustainable fisheries perspective but we are now learning how to use technology to enhance the recovery of our groundfish fishery here in Maine.

Documenting the Evolution: National Fisherman
David Jackson, former publisher of National Fisherman

National Fisherman has been the periodical of record for the fishing industry for over 65 years, providing context for today's hot button issues in the industry.  Former editor Dave Jackson, using photographs from the periodical's pages, will explore how National Fisherman documented the technological evolution in the fisheries and the resulting ecological and social effects.

Holiday events

Main Street Bucksport (MSB) is pleased to announce a schedule of holiday events planned for downtown Bucksport.

Local merchants and business owners are invited to a planning session at MacLeod's Restaurant on  Thursday, November 10  from  5-6pm  to share the special events you're planning this holiday season and to coordinate with others to make the most out of this holiday shopping season. Free drinks and snacks will be generously provided by MacLeod's. No need to RSVP, just show up. Let's work together to help all business owners in Bucksport find success during this important retail season.

For the past few years, The Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Bucksport, and Main Street Bucksport have worked together to sponsor pop-up shops, temporary retails spaces downtown in empty buildings. This year, due to an influx of new businesses, there will be no pop-ups. Bucksport is growing!

In addition to hosting the planning meeting, Main Street Bucksport will work with the Chamber of Commerce to promote several holiday events in downtown. On  Saturday, November 26 at 10am  there will be a ribbon cutting on Main Street to kick off Small Business  Saturday . Skip the driving and the crowds by shopping in downtown Bucksport this holiday season. Not only will you save time and gas money, but shopping locally has a real impact on the economy. A recent study conducted in Maine concluded that for every $100 you spend locally, $55 goes back into the local economy compared to only $38 when you shop at a big box or national retail store. ("Going Local: Quantifying the Economic Impacts of Buying from Locally Owned Businesses in Portland, Maine." Garrett Martin and Amar Patel, Maine Center for Economic Policy, Dec. 2011.)

On  Thursday, December 8  from  5-8pm , local shops and restaurants will feature free live music and stay open late for holiday shopping. Spend the evening in downtown Bucksport and enjoy some live music and holiday cheer. Schedule to be announced.

On  Saturday, December 10 , Santa arrives at BookStacks, accompanied by the Bucksport Fire Department. Time to be announced. Bring the kids and tell them to bring their wish list for Santa!

On  Friday, December 16  from  5-7pm , Main Street Bucksport hosts a holiday party! Thanks to a generous grant from the Hancock County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, we'll host our second fundraiser of the year. Special holiday-themed drinks, live music, delicious food, and plenty of holiday cheer to celebrate with your friends and neighbors. Location to be announced.

On  Sunday, December 18  from  1-3pm , volunteers will be at the Heart and Soul Building to wrap your gifts! We'll have gorgeous wrapping paper, bows, and special decorations and all you have to do is bring in your unwrapped gifts. Drop off your gifts and pick them up later in the afternoon or stay and enjoy cookies, hot cocoa, and holiday music. Free!
