Aviation Groups Petition FAA to Correct 'Serious' Rulemaking Error
On Sept. 22, a coalition of general aviation trade associations asked the Federal Aviation Administration to make a correction to the final repair station rule issued Aug. 12. The group of petitioners included the Aircraft Electronics Association, the Aeronautical Repair Station Association, the Aerospace Industries Association, Airlines for America, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, the National Air Carrier Association and the National Air Transportation Association. The final rule deleted the word "serious" in 14 CFR section 145.221 addressing the reporting of service difficulties. The group of petitioners requested reinsertion of the word "serious" -- otherwise, repair stations would be required to report any defect regardless of criticality. More...

FAA Avionics Maintenance Branch Presents Sessions on ADS-B Compliance at Upcoming AEA Regional Meetings in U.S.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration's Avionics Maintenance Branch will discuss equipment installation issues and offer insight on testing and system compliance during each of the AEA Regional Meetings this fall. Training certificates will be issued for this two-hour course to all attendees. The first session took place last week in Orlando, Florida, on Sept. 16. During that event, the FAA's Tim Shaver and Alex Rodriguez offered insight on testing and system compliance issues, including ADS-B field approvals, equipage and implementation updates, ADS-B compliance monitoring, post-installation performance statistics, common causes for noncompliance, and details of a sample compliance report. The session drew rave reviews from those repair shops in attendance. Two additional sessions are scheduled to take place in Reno, Nevada (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), and Kansas City, Missouri (Oct. 9-10).  Basic Wiring and Avionics Installation Training Course set for Nov. 3-5
The Aircraft Electronics Association plays host to a Basic Wiring and Avionics Installation Training Course, Nov. 3-5, in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The course is designed for currently employed repair station personnel, A&P mechanics and others interested in improving or acquiring the skills necessary to perform avionics installations in general aviation aircraft. This three-day seminar employs in-depth theory and hands-on lab exercises to immerse the seminar attendee in the best practices used to plan, manage, and install a general aviation avionics panel.  NextGen GA Fund Update
To date, the FAA has still not signed off on the loan guarantee certificates to get the NextGen GA Fund up and running, despite being urged to do so by congressional leaders such as Sam Graves (R, Mo.). GARMIN celebrated the maiden flight of the Beechjet 400A featuring the G5000 Integrated Flight Deck. The company called it a step toward completion of the G5000 upgrade for the Beechjet 400A and Hawker 400XP. In addition, Garmin announced its Angle of Attack system is now shipping and approved by the FAA for installation in a wide variety of general aviation aircraft. The company also announced the introduction of the G1000 FliteLevel Service Contract, which is a new extended warranty program for aircraft that are both in and out of warranty coverage.
ASPEN AVIONICS received FAA approval to offer a free 10-hour inflight trial of the company's Evolution Synthetic Vision. All new Aspen EFD 1000 Pro PFD purchasers will receive the free ESV trial with their display. In addition, Aspen received FAA certification for its Evolution VFR PFD. DEKLIN TECHNOLOGIES developed the TR1 and TR2 series transformer/relay adapters as a pre-assembled autopilot interface unit following the interconnect specifications and component requirements recommended by Aspen Avionics for PFD installations when interfaced with Century autopilots. In addition, the company said it's now selling the DWA2000 Annunciator, which replaces the DWA1000. The DWA2000 is a self-contained WAAS GPS annunciator panel for 14 and 28 VDC aircraft. AVIATION INSTITUTE OF MAINTENANCE will play co-host to a veteran's career fair and benefit fair Friday, Oct. 3, at its campus in Kansas City, Missouri. The event is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. SPIRIT AERONAUTICS of Columbus, Ohio, named MICHAEL SULLIVAN regional sales manager for the U.S. northeast region. CONSTANT AVIATION named BRIAN SPRECHER regional sales manager for the U.S. southeast region. REBTECH named STEPHEN SHARP to the newly created position of executive director of business development based at the company's main offices in Bedford, Texas. BECKER AVIONICS announced that another Bell Helicopter 429 light-twin, operated by HALO-Flight Inc., has been equipped with the Becker DVCS Digital Audio System. WYSONG ENTERPRISES unveiled a new trade show display at the Association of Air Medical Services annual Air Medical Transport Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, to honor the company's 25th anniversary in business. In addition, the company delivered a Bell Helicopter 407GX to Med-Trans Corporation prior to the event and said it's the first 407GX in Med-Trans' extensive U.S. fleet. TRINE AEROSPACE & DEFENSE received an FAA supplemental type certificate for the installation of its retractable camera mount system in the cargo pod of a Cessna 208 Caravan turbo-prop aircraft. SIERRA INDUSTRIES introduced the Sapphire program, a new suite of performance upgrades to the Cessna 525 Citation Jet series. The company also said it's in discussions with BendixKing for an avionics integration solution that centers on the recently introduced AeroVue platform. In addition, Sierra Industries announced a joint project to develop an engine retrofit program for the legacy Citation Jet platform using the recently certified GE Honda HF120 engine. FARGO JET CENTER expanded its services to the Minneapolis market by purchasing the assets of Premier Jet Center at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. TARRANT COUNTY COLLEGE in Fort Worth, Texas, officially opened its new TCC Northwest Campus Center of Excellence for Aviation, Transportation and Logistics. WESTERN AIRCRAFT, a Greenwich AeroGroup company, announced a retooling of its MRO sales and service team. Sales managers will focus on specific aircraft. CJ MILLER moves to regional sales manager; JODY HARRIS becomes senior service manager; DOUG ALWINE moves to the newly created position of regional sales manager-Hawker-Challenger; TERRY MERGAN is now sales account manager-jets; VERONIKA PALOVA is now business development manager; and TRACY GANDY remains as MRO turboprop sales manager, as well as DALE LESTER and LEE MILES as MRO sales managers. KANNAD AVIATION is a part of the McMurdo Group and the company's Techno-Sciences Inc., which was chosen by the Australia Maritime Safety Authority and Maritime New Zealand to deploy the next-generation satellite-aided search and rescue systems. The MEOSAR installations will be the first in the Asia Pacific region, and the company said this will reduce the time between a distress beacon activation and resulting emergency alert notification from hours to minutes. ELLIOTT AVIATION announced the STC for dual Honeywell NZ-2000 FMS upgrade that will allow for WAAS/LPV approach. The STC covers the latest NZ-2000 6.1 operating software of 03040. According to the company, the certification covers all Hawker 800s with SPZ-8000 avionics suite with an option for Honeywell's EPIC CDS/R LCD cockpit upgrade. COBHAM SATCOM reached an agreement to equip Hawaiian Airlines' fleet of Boeing 767-300 aircraft with its AVIATOR SwiftBroadband satellite communications systems.
