A Look Back at 2013 Paula Derks, Aircraft Electronics Association president, bids farewell to 2013 and shares her thoughts on the year coming to a close in this month's Avionics News magazine.
"While we had hoped 2013 might have been the turning point for the general aviation industry, it seems our economic rebound is taking its own sweet time," Derks said. "In the last five years, we have fought a sour economy, banking and housing market collapses, and financial crises around the world ... Thankfully, the AEA, along with our sister organizations, have fought back by visiting our elected representatives to share with them the true economic value of our industry." More...
Civil UAVs: Coming -- but not soon -- to Airspace near You You've seen the hype. While many have suggested using unmanned aerial vehicles for civil purposes, there are several issues that need to be resolved before they can safely share U.S. airspace with crewed aircraft.
Author John D. Ruley recently wrote in Avionics News, "The good news for avionics shops is the experts also agreed that when UAVs do move into U.S. airspace, they will almost certainly require routine checks just as manned aircraft do. And those checks, and related work, will provide business opportunities for avionics shops." More...

Fast Trak Training Courses Set for AEA Convention
The AEA International Convention & Trade Show offers more training in one day than most shows do in one week.
Take advantage of more than 75 hours of regulatory, technical, and business management training, which begins with the AEA's Fast Trak Training Courses on Wednesday, March 12.
Don't miss the biggest training week in the avionics industry, March 12-15, in Nashville, Tenn.
The AEA Convention is the only wholesale avionics show representing nearly 90 percent of the international government-certified avionics shops, and the AEA Trade Show is the platform of choice for the introduction of the new avionics products for 2014.

Three Training Courses at AEA in January
Class sizes are limited ... register now to guarantee your seat!
The three-day course is for technicians who have completed AEA's Basic Wiring and Avionics Installation Course and/or have a couple years of basic avionics installation practice and are looking for more experience integrating common general aviation installations. Technicians will learn how to plan, install, interface, configure and check out an installation consisting of a Garmin GTN 650 touchscreen nav/comm/GPS, Garmin GTX33ES remote transponder and an Aspen EFD1000 primary flight display.
In addition, a Pitot-Static and Transponder Certification Training Course is set for Jan. 30. Attendees will learn the proper methods for conducting pitot-static and transponder certification testing. This full-day course offers hands-on training, including a regulatory review and an explanation of the proper administrative procedures for completing these critical certifications. It also includes a transponder tune-up course. The contents of this course can be incorporated easily into approved training programs for certified repair stations.
Finally, the RVSM Maintenance and Advanced Transponder Training Course will take place Jan. 31. Attendees will be introduced to the regulations, documentation, test equipment and maintenance practices associated with performing RVSM maintenance and will follow with an in-depth look at Mode S transponders. This course assumes the attendee has good operating knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations 91.411 and 91.413.
All three courses will be taught by Don Dominguez of Radioman Avionics.
