 Avionics Sales Exceed $652 Million for Second-Quarter 2014
The Aircraft Electronics Association recently announced its second-quarter 2014 Avionics Market Report. In the three-month period of April, May and June 2014, total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales amounted to more than $652 million. The figure represented a 2.7 percent increase in sales compared to the second-quarter 2013 amount of more than $635 million as reported a year ago by the participating companies. Combined with the first-quarter sales figures, total worldwide sales now exceed $1.3 billion through the first six months of the year, a 6.8 percent when compared to the first six months of 2013. FAA Avionics Maintenance Branch Presents Sessions on ADS-B Compliance at Upcoming AEA Regional Meetings in U.S.
Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration's Avionics Maintenance Branch will discuss equipment installation issues and offer insight on testing and system compliance during three AEA Regional Meetings this fall. Training certificates will be issued for this two-hour course to all attendees. The events will take place in Orlando, Florida (Sept. 16-17); Reno, Nevada (Sept. 30-Oct. 1); and Kansas City, Missouri (Oct. 9-10). More...
FAA Selects Four Unleaded Fuels for Testing
The FAA announced earlier this week that it selected four unleaded fuels for the first phase of testing at the FAA's William J. Hughes Technical Center. According to a statement from the FAA, the goal is for government and industry to work together to have a new unleaded fuel that reduces lead emissions for general aviation by 2018. Shell and TOTAL, with one fuel each, and Swift Fuels, with two fuels, will now work with the FAA on phase-one testing, which will begin this fall and conclude in fall 2015. More...
 New ADS-B Solutions Unveiled at AirVenture
With the Jan. 1, 2020, ADS-B Out mandate looming in the U.S., several members of the Aircraft Electronics Association introduced new ADS-B solutions during the Experimental Aircraft Association's AirVenture, which took place in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Aircraft owners arrived at AirVenture anxious to learn more about ADS-B solutions, and they are becoming well aware that avionics repair shops, on average, must install more than 130 aircraft each day to equip the anticipated 186,000 general aviation fleet by the deadline. Restructure of Rotorcraft Parts 27 and 27 Airworthiness Standards
The FAA has given notice that disposes of public comments received in response to a Federal Register notice published Feb. 22, 2013, requesting comments on a potential restructuring of the rotorcraft airworthiness standards of 14 CFR Parts 27 (normal category rotorcraft) and 29 (transport category rotorcraft). Specifically, the agency sought comments on the necessity of updates to Parts 27 and 29, including whether to change the existing weight- and seat-based applicability standards for normal and transport rotorcraft. The comments indicated a substantial interest in revising or restructuring the certification standards for Parts 27 and 29, and the FAA's Rotorcraft Directorate will begin establishing the appropriate forums to involve interested parties. Parties interested in this initiative may look forward to future public announcements on upcoming developments. More...

The Aircraft Electronics Association plays host to a Certified Repair Station Training Course, Dec. 8-12, in Lee's Summit, Missouri. This week-long course is divided into training modules designed for start-up repair stations, as well as mature operations looking to improve their understanding of the regulations, performing internal audits and editing repair station manuals. It is for current quality managers, technicians, mechanics and repairmen who are involved in the management of a repair station, as well as individuals looking to establish a 14 CFR Part 145 repair station. COOL CITY AVIONICS received FAA TSO authorization for its new family of helicopter autopilots. AIRCELL announced the company's business aviation division has rebranded as GOGO BUSINESS AVIATION. ASPEN AVIONICS appointed DAVE BIBBY vice president of engineering. He has more than 34 years of experience in the aerospace industry and will be responsible for directing the company's engineering activities. ROCKWELL COLLINS announced plans to double the size of its facility in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. In addition, the company said its Aircraft Information Manager, a secure data transfer system for Pro Line Fusion, Pro Line 21 and Pro Line 4 avionics, is now European Aviation Safety Agency certified on 22 aircraft models. CUTTER AVIATION appointed BRIAN WALKER manager of customer experience-service operation. DUNCAN AVIATION named ANDREW ARCURI assistant manager of its engine Rapid Response Team network, focusing on the eastern regions of the U.S. In addition, the company published the third edition of its Business Jet Mode/Market Summary, adding additional information requested by users. SPECTRUM TECHNOLOGIES recently achieved a milestone sale of the 300th CAPRIS 50-100PCS UV laser wire marking system to The Boeing Company in the UK. GENESYS AEROSYSTEMS said its HeliSAS Helicopter Stability Augmentation System and Autopilot received FAA STC approval for installation in Eurocopter EC130 T2 helicopters. SPIRIT AERONAUTICS named WILLIAM HIGHFILL director of maintenance. He will be responsible for the production elements of the company's aircraft maintenance, avionics and interior refurbishment operations. FLYING COLOURS CORP. expanded its service offering through a range of new approvals and status upgrades. The U.S. facility now has approval for maintenance work on the latest aircraft types from Bombardier, the Challenger 350 and the Learjet 70/75. NEXTANT AEROSPACE announced the sale of its third Nextant 400XTi to FortAero Baltic Business Aviation Alliance.
