 ADS-B Part 23 and Part 25 Installations Forum, January 12-13
The Aircraft Electronics Association will play host to an FAA and industry forum to address the challenges of ADS-B Out installations in the Part 23 and 25 arena. Companies that manufacture ADS-B Out products or install these products should plan to attend this forum at the AEA's international headquarters in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The agenda is to investigate ADS-B Out from the installer's challenges, including availability of products; availability of supplemental type certificates; integration challenges; utility of field approvals; and customer motivation. Representatives from the FAA's Avionics Maintenance Branch, the Small Airplane Directorate and the Transport Directorate will be in attendance. The complimentary forum is divided into two sections, and industry professionals may attend both days or select the day that meets your needs. The forum begins Monday, Jan. 12, from 1-5 p.m. CST with a discussion on Part 23 installation challenges. It concludes Tuesday, Jan. 13, with a full-day to address Part 25 installation challenges.  Steve Wysong Joins AEA Board of Directors
Steve Wysong, president of Wysong Enterprises of Blountville, Tennessee, has been appointed by David Loso, chairman of the AEA board of directors, to complete the term of a vacated director seat. He replaces Brian Wilson who stepped down from the board after accepting a different position within the industry. Wysong has served on the AEA's government and industry affairs committee, and he has participated in several FAA/industry rotorcraft forums hosted by the AEA. More...

 Coping with the Cold: Alaska's Merrill Field Instruments gets Resourceful
On a chilly afternoon at Lake Hood in Alaska, technicians lift an aircraft out of the water with a float truck. Biting wind and frosted metal make for cold hands and red faces, but the crew presses on with the task. Lake Hood, the world's busiest seaplane base, handles nearly 200 daily operations, and now Merrill Field Instruments is helping to service the more than 1,100 aircraft based there. EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY was given a Top School designation for the sixth straight year by Military Advanced Education magazine in its Guide to Colleges and Universities. Active-duty military and veterans comprise 54 percent of Embry-Riddle's total enrollment.
GARMIN unveiled its new GDL 69 and GDL 69A SXM datalink receivers, offering access to new weather service packages with lower activation fees and made available by SiriusXM Satellite Radio audio.
GULF COAST AVIONICS completed a full digital upgrade on a Bell 412EP helicopter operated by the Panamanian Servicio Nacional Aeronaval.
DAC INTERNATIONAL reached a multiyear distribution agreement with ESTERLINE CMC ELECTRONICS. DAC will serve as an international distributor of CMC's new CMA-6800 LCD displays that is designed to replace aging CRT units in older business jets.
BECKER AVIONICS received Silver Medal Supplier status by Xi'an Aircraft Company Ltd. in China. Previously, Becker Avionics was a Bronze level supplier.
EDMO DISTRIBUTORS added two new regional sales managers, THAI JOHNSON and DANIEL SMITH, to the outside sales team.
JEPPESEN helped UK-based Flybe achieve paperless operational authorization from the UK Civil Aviation Authority. Flybe integrated Jeppesen FliteDeck Pro on iPad as its electronic flight bag solution fleet-wide. Jeppesen also helped SmartLynx Airlines gain paperless operation authorization from the Latvian Civil Aviation Authority.
SATCOM DIRECT launched a new data center solutions provider, TerraCom Direct.
ROCKWELL COLLINS was awarded a contract by Boeing to provide its next-generation, large-format flight displays, integrated surveillance system and select flight control systems as standard equipment on the Boeing 777X. In addition, Rockwell Collins selected ASTRONICS CORP.'s Astronics Ballard Technology as the preferred vendor for avionics databus test products under a long-term enterprise sourcing agreement.
VALAIR AVIATION completed an agreement with Blackhawk Modifications that renews Valair as an installation and service center for Blackhawk's line of PT6A new engine upgrades.

Industry advocates on Capitol Hill
In 2009, General Aviation Caucuses were formed in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate to inform congressional members and staff about the importance of general aviation to the nation's economy and transportation system. Today, the House GA Caucus has grown to become one of the largest caucuses in the House of Representatives. A listing of current House and Senate GA Caucus members is available on the AEA website.
The congressional caucuses recently lost a few members due to retirement or election defeat in November, and new caucuses will be formed when the next session begins in January 2015. More...
