From the CEO...
It's that time of year when you hate turning on the TV for fear of another political commercial, but voting for those candidates that support our industry is imperative.  Please review our list of   Endorsed Candidates and Issues and share them with your family, friends and coworkers.  You may be frustrated with the options, but national, state and local races are so critical this year!

Workforce Development Update:

Workforce Development Update
On Tuesday, October 25, almost 650 students from Washoe and surrounding counties, converged on the Reno Livestock Event Center Exhibit Hall for the first ever Northern Nevada Construction Career Day. Over 40 exhibitors provided amazing demonstrations and hands-on activities for the kids. Everything from virtual welding to painting and plastering, students had a chance to pick up some tools, get their hands dirty. They also got to talk to  Union, Company and Trades representatives about what it is really like to work in our growing industry.  The event was the culmination of over 6 months of work by members of the Nevada Construction Collaborative, specifically Nevada Builders, AGC and the Western Apprenticeship Coordinators Assn.  Also a big thanks to the Washoe County School District for their help and support in making it a successful event!

On Friday, October 7, we were proud to participate in the Las Vegas Construction Career Day. We engaged over 1,000 students from area high schools, thank you to UNLV and NCA for another great event. Special thanks to Lt Governor MArk Hutchison for presenting the Governor's proclamation designating October as Careers in Construction Month.

OSHA

OSHA Top 10
It's that time again when OSHA releases a preliminary list of the 10 most frequently cited safety and health violations for the fiscal year.  As usual in the top ten for 2016 are construction industry standard violations with fall protection as the number one cited violation, followed by scaffolds at number three and ladders at number seven.  Employers should check themselves on how well they comply with these frequently cited standards.
Employers who have workers that are exposed to falls from elevation should get ahead of the hazards by setting up a written plan to get the job done safely.  Identify and provide the right equipment for fall prevention and personal fall protection on the job.  Finally, the employer should train everyone to use the equipment safely and properly and remind them that use of the equipment will be enforced.  Don't assume everyone knows how or wants to properly utilize fall protection equipment.
When workers are working on or working around scaffolding, make sure they have been trained to recognize hazardous conditions.  Most of the citations issued are related to improper assembly and access to the scaffold system, or lack of inspection by a competent person.   And last but certainly not least, ladders.  With so many uses and types of ladders out there, employers should make sure that they are providing the correct ladders for the job as well as the training for workers on how to properly choose and safely use ladders.  Year after year, ladders are commonly misused, and this leads to the thousands of injuries and in some cases fatalities that could have been avoided by ensuring that ladder inspections are taking place and safe ladder use is communicated to employees and enforced on the job.
