Space Cities Competition Winners
Congratulations to our team of eleventh and twelfth grade students who placed first in the statewide Cities in Space Competition in Austin last Friday!  Our students won first for their biodome model, written report, and video collaboration.

The Cities in Space Competition coincides with the New Worlds Conference each fall where student presentations are held. Hosted by New Worlds Conference 2016 this fall in Austin, Texas, students come together to present, compete and learn from one another about building a new world beyond Earth and how to create a surviving and thriving community. When they are not presenting, students competing at Cities in Space have the opportunity to listen to speakers during the conference as well as meet scientists, engineers, NASA experts, New Space leaders and astronauts. Students attend a luncheon with designated speakers such as leading scientists, entrepreneurs, researchers and businesses.
In support of STEAM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Education and Project Based Learning, the Cities in Space Competition is about creating a structure that can enable the human race to survive and thrive into a new civilization in space.

Women's Global Leadership Conference

There were twenty-two students who attended the Women's Global Leadership event Tuesday and Wednesday. Six of those students attended the Wednesday event as a part of the IPAA externship experience and the other sixteen were invited as guests of StatoilStudents listened to numerous speakers who shared about upcoming changes within the industry.

One of the speakers spoke about the importance of the oil and gas company as well as the changes being made to better that field. Another speaker shared about the necessary skills needed to become a helpful energy leader. Our Energy students had an awesome time and represented our school well. Thank you, Statoil for your generous donation of tickets and for the invitation for our Energy women!

Cohort 5 PBL #2 Exhibition
Cohort 5 juniors presented their final products from PBL #2 last week as part of a project showcase.  Students, teachers, and community members were invited to view their final projects which included a 3D rendering of their community renovation.  Students completed research on a local Houston neighborhood and were responsible for designing or remodeling a building in the neighborhood that would increase the culture in the community and preserve the history of each unique neighborhood.  The final projects were incredible!  Great work to all the students who worked on this project!

2016 Plaster - Invitation to Collaborate

Several of our senior engineering students are participating in a 10-week program at TX/RX Labs (a non-profit hackerspace in EaDo) where they are completing a 30-hour curriculum that integrates modern and ancient forms of creating. The prototype they are making integrates 2D and 3D CAD modeling, laser cutting, 3D printing, and metal casting (in addition to a couple of fun side projects). This program is funded by the "Making the Future Grant" - a program sponsored by Cognizant, an energy consulting company that supports many STEAM educational initiatives. Mr. Joseph Miller, the youth outreach coordinator at TX/RX Labs was the recipient of this grant and our participation was a coordinated effort between Dr. Pitcher and Mr. Miller. We hope to continue building our relationship with TX/RX through future projects and extend the opportunity to students outside EDD.

Student Spotlight

This week the spotlight shines on Freshman, Kai Page. He is an extremely bright and funny student who is always willing to help his fellow peers or technologically-challenged teachers. We thank you, Kai, for being an excellent example of a well-rounded Energy student and we look forward to watching you emerge into a campus leader in the years to come.
Teacher Spotlight

This week's spotlight teacher goes to an outstanding teacher, Mr. McCommis, who teaches Statistics, pre-Calculus, and geometry at Energy Institute High School. He attended Eastern Illinois University, where he received his Bachelor's in Math and psychology. He then went on to attend the University of Missouri- St Louis, where he received his Master's in Education Administration. Before becoming a teacher, Mr. McCommis lived a busy life, living in over nine different states. While his intention was not necessarily to become a teacher, he quickly found that the thing he loved was education. He states, "It's great to be able to get kids interested in a subject that they may not always like or find easy." He finds inspiration in being able to change how others feel about math and helping future generations succeed in the topic. He even finds ways to be productive in his free time, as enjoys writing marching band field shows.
TREMENDOUS TEAMMATE: Joshua Humphrey would like to give a high-five to Brandon McGlaughlin for being an awesome team member and for his great help in the Model UN Game.
LOYAL LEADER: Kiara Doroteo would like to high five LeeAnna for being an awesome artist and group leader. She contributes great ideas to the group. Way to go team-leader!
MARVELOUS MARVIN: Lee Anne Zipprich would like to acknowledge Marvin Miranda for being helpful in class. Thank you for being such a helpful classmate!
SENSATIONAL SENIORS:
Angie Sanchez would like to give a special shoutout to Keria Kindle for always giving her highest effort, for being such a good friend. She would also like to give a high five to Amanda Rodriguez for being so efficient and making sure senior school events take place.

BENEVOLENT BPA: Chance Bednorz would like to give a shout out to Gerardo Escobedo for stepping up to the plate and taking control of the A-lunch BPA meetings. BPA values leaders like you!

GENIUS GENESYS INTERN: Rebecca Teran would like to give a shout out to Erika Mendoza. "She is a great friend that has been working really hard this year. She has been able to maintain high grades, while attending Genesys for her internship." Good job Erika!

Make it a great day for someone else by publicly acknowledging a member of Energy.

CAMPUS FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK

Interviewing for Success
By: Chance Bednorz

Hello, My Name Is...

One of the most important parts of an interview is your introduction to the interviewer. A solid handshake and a simple "Hello, my name is..." never fails to succeed. At the end of the interview, make sure to shake hands again, and re-state your name. You want to make sure that you are a memorable candidate and that they know who you are.

Appropriately Dressed
You might be interviewed for a various number of positions, from a job at a fast food company to an internship with a big company. Show up to your interview in your best attire. A full on suit is never overdressed, rather its classy and professional in the eyes of your interviewer. Nobody has ever been faulted for dressing up more than everyone else.

Smile and Nod
A smiling face and solid eye contact show that you are engaged and give off a positive vibe. Subtle cues in body language say more about you than words can express. So small things like making eye contact with the interviewer when speaking, or a simple smile in your introduction, could be just what you need to put you over the top and get you the position you want.

Take Your Time
If all the presentations we do at Energy have taught us anything, it's that we need to think before we speak and avoid any filler words. An interview is usually question-based, so there will be plenty of times you will need to give an answer to your interviewer. You will want to present yourself as best as you can, so there's no shame in taking one or two seconds to come up with a well-formulated response.

Breath Check

Good hygiene is super important in everyday life and becomes that much more important when going in for an interview. Make sure that you have showered, brushed your teeth, and put on deodorant for the day. Smell fresh, look fresh, feel fresh.
