On October 20th over 30 guests joined Missy Dean, Director of Governmental Relations and Member Services and Sarah Lingenfelter, Administrative Services Coordinator at the District Dinner Meeting (DDM) in Woodward to hear from OML regarding the upcoming legislative sessions and current issues effecting Oklahoma cities and towns. Dean spoke on behalf of OML covering such topics as SQ 777 and SQ 779 as well as E-Fairness, 9-1-1 Reform, and Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) audit enhancement bills that OML worked on and were signed into law. She also expressed the importance of getting to know your legislators and pointed out that this year before the elections even take place on November 8th, there are 43 new legislators. Dean also talked about issues that are coming up in the 2017 legislative session such as Real ID, Civil Asset Forfeiture reform, $1.50 cigarette tax proposal for health care and many others.
Numerous city officials from the area were in attendance at the DDM and provided information to the group. Alan Riffel, Woodward City Manager, discussed the Oklahoma Municipal Utility Providers (OMUP). Guymon Mayor Kim Peterson talked about the Mayors Council of Oklahoma (MCO) and the importance of mayors' involvement in this association. Kirk Fisher, Mayor of Beaver, discussed the work center issue and how it is important to hold legislators accountable. Shaun Barnett, Woodward Planning and Community Executive, also discussed 9-1-1 Reform.

NOI Training Held in Woodward. Only Three Newly Elected Official Classes Left, Sign Up Today!

Next classes are November 17th in McAlester and February 11th in Stillwater
The NOI training session was held in Woodward last week with 23 newly elected and appointed municipal officials gathering at the Woodward Conference Center to receive their eight hours of state required training. Throughout the year the Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) provides an intensive educational program specifically tailored for individuals who are newly elected officials as well as experienced officials who want to keep up-to-date on leading municipal issues.
New officials unable to attend the Woodward NOI still have three additional opportunities to receive the training provided by OML in the following cities: McAlester, Stillwater and Lawton. The workshop concentrates on topics such as the Open Meeting Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, Municipal Finance, Ethics and much more. Don't let time slip away before you register. Public Employees Relations Board Sunsets
|
As you may recall, during the 2016 Legislative Session
HB 2409
sought to extend the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) sunset date from July 1, 2016 to July 1, 2020. It failed Senate deadlines and was not signed into law. Does this mean PERB is terminated under the Oklahoma Sunset Law?

Rose State College's Environmental Training Center Needs Your Input

Rose State College's Environmental Training Center has been awarded funding through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for wastewater and water treatment operator job readiness and training. This fall Rose State will be re-applying for the EPA grant and they need your support in the application process. OML Attends Northeast Oklahoma Regional Alliance Meeting

On Tuesday, October 25th, OML staffers Missy Dean, Director of Government Relations, and Sarah Lingenfelter, Administrative Services Coordinator, attended the 8th annual Northeast Oklahoma Regional Alliance (NORA) meeting held at Northeastern State University. Over 300 professionals, city officials, students and members of the Cherokee Nation were present to discuss leadership development and tools to promote economic access in the Northeast region of Oklahoma. OML Presents Mike Dockrey of Holdenville with Honor Roll of Service Award
|
For over 20 years, the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) has recognized city and town officials and employees who have completed 25 years of service. Each honoree's name is inscribed in the permanent Honor Roll of Service. On October 18th at the Holdenville city council meeting OML board member and Holdenville Mayor Beverly Rodgers was honored to present the OML 25 year award to Mike Dockrey. Dockrey began his career with the City of Holdenville in the Street Department. He has always been willing to do whatever job was needed and consequently now holds the job titles of Code Enforcement Officer, Emergency Management Director, Head of IT, Zoning Director and right hand man to the Mayor and city department heads. Please join OML in recognizing Mike Dockrey for his many years of dedication and commitment to his community.

OMCTFOA Holds 60th Annual Conference
|
|
Oklahoma Municipal Clerks, Treasurers and Finance Officers Association (OMCTFOA) held their 60th
Annual Conference last week in Stillwater. Participants from all around the state attended the training. The Opening Ceremony included an action packed presentation of Stress in the Workplace by Emmy-winning TV journalist Cindy Morrison. Concurring sessions included such topics as how to polish your communication, a report from the Oklahoma Tax Commission along with an update on Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). GASB establishes accounting and financial reporting standards for U.S. state and local governments that follow Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The session on active shooter response was very informative and provided effective practices for coping with this type of situation. The week concluded with a look at the legislative process, concepts for learning sustainability & planning in your community and ideas on how to build a culture that empowers employees. The conference attendees enjoyed a great opportunity to meet and network with fellow OMCTFOA members.
