Greetings from the Director
November promises to be an exciting month at the Concord Free Public Library with several literary events planned.  In commemoration of the bicentennial of Charlotte Brontë's birth, Randall Warniers will give a talk on 11/7 at 7:00 p.m. on Brontë's life and the novel Jane Eyre.  This will be followed by a showing of the film Jane Eyre (1943) on 11/14 at 7:00 p.m.  All are welcome to attend these free events at the Fowler Branch Library.  Please be sure to also check out the Main Library's display of books by and about Charlotte Brontë through 11/21.

Also of note during November, Newbery Honor Medalist Grace Lin will deliver the 2016 Leslie Riedel Memorial Lecture for Young People on 11/18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Library.  Inspire the young readers in your life by registering them to attend this special event.

Please mark your calendars for the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library's annual Holiday Book Sale, December 2 - 4, 2016. It is very festive and supports many valuable library programs throughout the year.

Leslie Riedel Memorial Lecture: Grace Lin
The annual Leslie Riedel Memorial Lecture for Young People will present children's author/illustrator Grace Lin on Friday, November 18, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Library Lobby.
 
Lin's parents were Taiwanese immigrants to the United States and she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design.  Her books emanate from a childhood of two cultures and have received numerous accolades.  She won the Newbery Honor for Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and the Geisel Award for Ling and Ting: Not Exactly the Same

The lecture will be followed by a reception and book-signing.  Copies of Lin's books will be available for purchase.  The event is free and open to kids ages 8 and up as well as adult fans of Lin's work.  Registrations are strongly recommended. [ Sign Up][ View Poster]

Past speakers of the series include children's authors/illustrators David Macaulay, Chris Van Allsburg, Jerry Pinkney, Lois Lowry and Tomie dePaola.

Author Talk with Kaia Stern
Wednesday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m.
Main Library
Kaia Stern is an educator with 22 years of experience working across multiple domains. Currently Executive Director of Concord Prison Outreach, her work focuses on transformative justice, dignity and education in prison. Her book Voices from American Prisons: Faith, Education and Healing introduces the voices of people living, working and studying in U.S. Prisons and offers an analysis of penal confinement as well as avenues for reform.  Open to all.
Celebrating Charlotte Brontë
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charlotte Brontë, the Library will host these following events at the Fowler Branch -

Literary Talk with Randall Warniers: Charlotte Brontë & Jane Eyre
Monday, November 7 at 7:00 p.m.
Randall Warniers will present a talk on the life of Charlotte Brontë and her novel Jane Eyre. The talk will discuss three topics: the brilliance of Jane Eyre as a novel, Charlotte Brontë's family life in the wilds of northern England, and the context of social changes in mid-nineteenth century Victorian society. Randall Warniers has pursued interests in 19th-century British literature and early 20th-century American cinema for decades. He has worked in the world of publishing since 1989, and he is currently a freelance editor and book publisher. The event is free and open to all. [Sign Up]

Coming Summer 2017
"Concord, which is my Rome": Henry Thoreau and His Home Town - an exhibition drawn from the William Munroe Special Collections of the Concord Free Public Library to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of Thoreau's birth will take place from July 7 through October 30, 2017 in the Art Gallery.

The exhibit explores Thoreau's life and work within the context of his home town of Concord, Massachusetts through manuscript materials, documents, letters, photographs, maps, surveys, engravings, record and account books, and related artwork, all exclusively from the library's William Munroe Special Collections.  Stay tuned for more information.
