#DiabetesDanceDare
As you are now aware (and hopefully dancin'!) the challenge is on! The American Diabetes Association has launched a new and less chillin' take on the ice bucket challenge with hopes for raising both funds and awareness to stop diabetes. Celebrities, TV personalities, athletes and ordinary folk are hearing the call and having a shimmy in the name of a great causeAfter all, "every 23 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes"!

World Smile Day
Ever wonder where that cute little yellow smiley face originated?  Well, now you can! Invented by Harvey Ball in the 60's this happy little smile is now a global icon. Be sure to use it broadly and often, especially on World Smile Day! Better yet become a World Smile ambassador.

Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 through
October 15
This month  recognizes the rich and important contributions of those people of Hispanic origins and cultures with roots in many different places. Diabetes is impacting many Hispanic people, including some specific populations more than others. The American Diabetes Association let's us know that with access to proper care, at least those with type 2 who are over 65 are having better outcomes, even despite the differences in impacts. The greater risk is those under 65 who don't realize they might be developing diabetes!

Ex-Football Player Tackles his Type 2 Diabetes
Former  University of Michigan football player found himself facing an epidemic of diabetes and other health issues in his family of Mexican heritage. He made a dramatic change and went vegan, which resulted in turning his diabetes and health completely around

Happy Halloween!
October 31
It wouldn't be Halloween without poking a little diabetes fun (get it!?)  and some pretty hilarious memes from Sizzle into a holiday that gets wackier and spookier every year! Or check out the "unique" diabetes Halloween costume clipart brainstorms from The Diabetic Cyclist!

Choose Your Yummies Wisely!
Yes, at Halloween virtually everyone gets stuck tempted by the oh-so-many and oh-so-scrumptious candy temptations.   A little forethought and planning with help from Diabetic Living can make those choices smarter and safer while still sweet and delicious.

And for kids, while it's important to let them participate fully in the Halloween fun, Diabetes Forecast offers tips and tricks for how to help those with diabetes to be conscious of portion control, ingredients and to be creative about what to do with that post-Halloween candy stash.

The Big Blue what??

Well, like most things cool and diabetes, a few people got together with a really nifty (and blue ) idea. Some more people came along and thought, "Wow, this is a neat idea!" Then, before you knew it, it had spread and the Big Blue Test was well underway. What a great group brainstorm it ended up being!

Starting in 2009, Big Blue Test spread quickly, moving throughout its online TuDiabetes community. Originally it was a campaign of camaraderie and companionship where members of the community checked their glucose levels at the same moment in time, no matter where they were in the world. Over time, the physical activity component was added, offering some additional fun and active purpose. Today the global awareness campaign has grown, aiming to reach thousands worldwide, emphasizing the importance of staying active with diabetes.

The sponsorships that are now integrated into the program enable Big Blue Test to offer three targeted grants that give big and give back. Since 2010, over $250,000 in grants has been awarded to the life-saving diabetes community.

But, wait! You still haven't told us actually WHAT it is?

The Big Blue Test is easy (and fun)! Basically, it's four steps:
1)Test your glucose
2) Get active
3) Test Again
4) Share

If you don't have diabetes, no worries - you can skip the testing part! The rumor is participants can see some incredible drops in their blood glucose levels after some sustained exercise. The collective group intention is that between October 14 and November 14, 2016, participants will perform 14-20 minutes of physical activity and then report their results at BigBlueTest.org or by using the iPhone or Android smartphone app.

You can enter more than once; and please do! Each entry will result in $1 donated to the three selected U.S.-based nonprofit initiatives. The overall goal for the 2016 Big Blue Test campaign is to collect a minimum of 45,000 entries for this year ($3 total per entry resulting in $5,000 for each the selected nonprofits). This level of participation will help Big Blue Test to reach a grand total of 150,000 entries since its official launch in 2010.

This year, Diabetes Hands Foundations
announced three organizations that will benefit from the 2016 Big Blue Test Grants. The $15,000 pledge will support programs aimed at providing lifesaving supplies, medical tests, and patient education to people living with diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes.

"The Big Blue Test rallies communities to experience the impact that small changes can have on their health," said Gene Kunde, CEO of Diabetes Hands Foundation. "The grants generated by Big Blue Test participants will impact thousands of people with diabetes who have been traditionally underserved."

Drumroll please...

The three selectees are:

With this grant funding, DiabetesSisters will grow the newly launched Minority Initiative which is focused on bringing resources and education to African American and Hispanic women with diabetes and pre-diabetes.

We Are Diabetes
We Are Diabetes has created a Recovery Toolkit that will be available digitally for health care providers. With the Big Blue Test grant funding, they will be able to distribute physical copies to clinics across the country.

The Riverside Community Diabetes Collaborative will be using Big Blue Test funds to purchase equipment for their annual "Together We Can!" event which is a free seminar that includes health screenings and education on healthy living with diabetes, and addresses the emotional aspect of living with diabetes.

Okay, I get it now. Get busy, get BIG, go blue!

Exactly. #Bigbluetest. See you there!

Where Are They Now

1. How many years did you attend camp and what was the last year that you attended?
I attended CDBC for (I'm so sorry this is kind of a guess) 6 years!? I honestly cannot remember but 6 sounds right.
2. What is your favorite camp memory?
Oh wow so many amazing ones! If I had to pick just one I would say...My second to last year of camp my team won the playoff's!! It was so special and such a long road. Our best two players were not able to play in the last game but we were still able to win! Every year I wanted my team to win the playoffs and we had finally done it!
3. Did you learn anything at camp to improve your diabetes care?
I learned that I could achieve anything. As a child I was very adventurous, but it was my parents had their doubts. After my first year at camp I was able to prove to myself and my mom and dad that I can be independent and achieve anything I put my mind to. I was able to continue to play basketball after my camp years ended and even went on to play 2 years of college basketball as SBCC. Camp taught me that I could do what ever I wanted as long as I maintained my blood sugar.
4. Do you stay in contact with anyone you met while attending camp?
I speak with Jason G. on a regular basis and I am still Facebook friends with many fellow camp goers as well as counselors and coaches from when I attended.
5. Do you have any advice for present or future campers?
Enjoy yourself, Camp is amazing! Don't be afraid to participate. Things like talent shows can seem intimidating at your age but I promise you will not regret it if you participate! Camp only comes once a year :)
*Tell us about yourself since your camper days....did you attend college and where...are you working...are you married...do you have children...anything else you would like to share...
I attended Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) where I played 2 years of basketball and received my Associates of Arts in Liberal Studies.  After a second ACL tear I quit basketball and went on to attend  Northern Arizona University NAU where I received my Bachelors of Science in Finance.

I am currently a litigation claims adjuster for an insurance company. For anyone worried about find a career with diabetes my employer is completely understanding and even has a nurse onsite with an extra diabetes test kit. They also have a kitchen stocked with juice and sodas if I ever get low blood sugar.
I married my college sweetheart and man of my dreams, Gilbert Babylonia. He is not diabetic but he sure knows a lot about diabetes.
We do not have any children but we do have 3 cats and a dog.
