October Students of the Month
Helen Wiegand - 2017
Future Biomedical Engineer, Helen Wiegand hopes to attend Johns Hopkins University before attending medical school.  Helen’s favorite classes at North were AP Biology and AP Computer Science because they were the classes that challenger her the most.  Her favorite classes this year are AP Physics C with Mr. Quinn and AP English Literaturewith Ms. Fedorko because they are fantastic teachers.  Helen is part of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Interact, and Peer Leaders.  She has been doing Taekwondo for 10 years at the Impact Martial Arts School.  Helen is a second degree black belt and once a week for the past five years, she has been teaching Taekwondo classes to students.  She won first place in sparring at the U.S. Open ISKA World Martial Arts Championship in 2015.  Helen has also played the piano for the past ten years and earned a score of Merit on Grade 6 of the Trinity College of London Music Examination.  Over the last two summers, she had research internships and worked in a neural engineering lab at George Mason University and a plant biology lab at Michigan State University.  Helen’s favorite memories at North were Friendship Day and going to the Latin class field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Good luck next year!

Cole Marra -  2017
Senior, Cole Marra has had a memorable time at North Hunterdon.  Cole’s favorite class at NHHS was AP Chemistry with Dr. Wilhelm.  They did many cool labs in her class involving real chemicals.  The labs made the class extremely fun and exciting.  Cole is involved with National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, and Science Honor Society.  He is also a member of the Lions Soccer Team and the Lions Wrestling Team.  In wrestling, Cole won a district 17 championship at 138 pounds last year.  He plays club soccer out of school.  Cole participated in Destination Imagination, where he and his team won the state championship the past six years.  His favorite memories at North are from wrestling at home under the lights with a packed jungle.  Next year, Cole would like to pursue a degree in Engineering and eventually attend medical school.  This fall, he will be applying to many schools including USNA, the University of Virginia, and Vanderbilt.  Good luck Cole!

October Athletes of the Month
Jordan Beneducci - 2017

Co-captain, Jordan Beneducci has been playing soccer competitively for 13 years.  Jordan’s strongest skills are hard work, resilience, and toughness.  She plays center back next to her best friend, Kristina Harrel.  This year, the team is looking to break the record for number of wins in a season, instead of looking to reach individual records.  Jordan feels very lucky to be on a team that is so selfless by putting the team goals ahead of their personal goals.  The team hit a couple of bumps in the road early on, but have since grown together.  Jordan has played club soccer since the sixth grade.  She is someone who likes to constantly be competing.  Outside of playing soccer, Jordan also plays basketball and track & field.  She has been very fortunate to have assumed a leader role in all the sports she has participated in.  Jordan has made incredible friendships with all of her teammates and coaches.  She is part of different clubs at North including Interact & Able, Student Ambassadors, Latin Club, National English Honor Society, and National Art Honor Society.  Jordan plans to continue playing soccer in college.  She plans on majoring in Psychology and moving on to medical school to become a psychiatrist.  Some of her top schools are Villanova and Wake Forest.

Mark Winter - 2017

Senior Mark Winter has been playing competitive soccer for over eight years.  Mark’s strongest skills on the soccer field are his communication skills, vision of the field, ball distribution, and dribbling.  Another strong skill is his leadership abilities, which is partly why he is one of three captains on the team.  Mark is able to play where the team needs him the most including forward, center back, and center mid.  He is proud to be playing on a team with so much talent and heart.  Mark also played for Stronghold SC and now plays for Hunterdon FC.  Soccer has always been a real passion of his for a long time.  Playing soccer has helped Mark so much and impacted who he is today.  “The Beautiful Game” has shaped him into a better person, both physically and mentally.  Mark has made so many great and close friends that he would have never met if he wasn’t playing the game.  He will always be thankful for everyone who has helped him over the years including his coaches, teammates, supporters, and most of all his parents who have always been there for him.  At North, Mark participates in National Honors Society doing various volunteer activities such as blood drives and breast cancer awareness month.  He would love to play soccer in college either for the varsity team or on a competitive club team.  Mark plans on majoring in Marketing at either the University of Maryland at College Park, Syracuse University, and TCNJ.

Congratulations to both Kevin and Michael!

Photography Student Showcase
James Izlar  '17
When asked if I could have any ability, I usually say to freeze time.  Freezing time allows you to focus on what's around you, and helps you get a clearer understanding of the current situation.  It is why I prefer photography as a method of storytelling; it freezes the moment, allowing you to fully grasp what you're seeing.  Sometimes it can inspire you, sometimes it can haunt you. Sometimes it lets you create the story for yourself instead of it simply being told to you. I believe this factor lets the story resonate with the viewer long after they first saw the picture. Usually, I make the purpose of my pictures subtle, so the viewer can create their own story. For instance, one of the pictures feature a man who appears to be sharpening something. You can't see what it is, nor do you know what the object
will be used for. I purposely shot it this way to let the viewer interpret what is happening to give it a more intimate and personal experience with the image. Sometimes, however, I create the story myself. Everything in the image of the man reading the Life magazine was intentional, down to the clothing he was wearing. I wanted to portray a typical man of the year 1964, including the casual wear and the wedding ring. Due to the cover image, it is very apparent that this was to take place after the death of John F. Kennedy. In a way, this type of method is like travel time for me; I can look at this and transport myself to that time and place-that's what I believe makes a perfect story.

Coaches Vs. Cancer
North Hunterdon Gymnastics Team just raised $102 in just ten minutes for Coaches vs. Cancer at our 10/18/16 Pink Meet! Our North team was terrific in the handstand contests and flutter kick challenges. They even inspired their opposing team, Bridgewater Panthers, to join in the Mat Flip Relay and the Backflip Rally Circle!
Thank you, Debbie House and the entire exec board, for leading Booster Club’s efforts to raise awareness and funds for cancer research among all the fall sports.
Thank you, Dr. Bergacs, for supporting the team this season, this Coaches Vs Cancer event, as well as recognizing our Captains with pink roses at the Pink Meet opening ceremony.

3rd Annual Running of the Lions 5K
A BIG thank you to all runners, volunteers, and sponsors for coming out and supporting our 5K this year! The rain stayed away and allowed almost 300 runners and walkers to take part in this terrific community event. The NHEF raised over $12,000 this year, which will go directly to helping our students at North.

Annual NJ Devils Discounted Hockey Tickets

Every year we get the chance to offer discounted Devils tickets to the North community. Proceeds from all tickets sold using our coupon code will benefit the foundation.
Every ticket has a chance to win additional prizes with the biggest prize being the chance to win a deluxe box for a future Devils game! NHEF won the box in the 2015-16 hockey season and we then raffled it off at our spring fundraiser.

We will announce the hockey ticket sales beginning in November, so stay tuned!
