Kol Ami is proud to co-sponsor a community conversation with Ma'avarim,
Israel's Transgender Rights Organization

August 24th
7PM - 9PM
Presented by A Wider Bridge
Hosted by JQ International at their JQlub space

801 Larrabee St. Suite #10
West Hollywood, CA 90069

A Wider Bridge has built a groundbreaking U.S. tour with leaders from the Israel's transgender community. The U.S. tour will introduce Ma'avarim (Hebrew for "transitions") to LGBT leaders and communities in five cities across the U.S. (South Florida, New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, and Los Angeles) to highlight the Israeli transgender community's diversity and progress towards equality, as well as thei r need for advocacy and support as they work to address their ongoing challenges and needs.

Over the past several years, the Israeli transgender community has gained a stronger and more prominent role within Israel's LGBT community, and garnered greater recognition of their contributions and achievements in Israel. Yet the Israeli trans community still faces many challenges in the public and legal arenas - particularly outside of progressive, secular Tel Aviv. Elisha Alexander, Executive Director of Ma'avarim, and three young Israeli transgender leaders join A Wider Bridge to discuss their work of building transgender community and advocacy all across Israel. Be there to take part in this powerful discussion.

15th Anniversary screening of Trembling Before G-d, August 21st

Trembling Before G-d is an unprecedented feature documentary that shatters assumptions about faith, sexuality, and religious fundamentalism. Built around intimately-told personal stories of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, the film portrays a group of people who face a profound dilemma - how to reconcile their passionate love of Judaism and the Divine with the drastic Biblical prohibitions that forbid homosexuality.

Vividly shot with a courageous few over five years in Brooklyn, Jerusalem, Los Angeles, London, Miami, and San Francisco, Trembling Before G-d is an international project with global implications that strikes at the meaning of religious identity and tradition in a modern world. What emerges is a loving and fearless testament to faith and survival and the universal struggle to belong

This special screening will be at UCLA Film Archive and is part of the UCLA Outfest Legacy Project and UCLA Sundance Collection.

Q&A with director Sandi DuBowski and David Silverstein, featured in the film

UCLA Film Archive 15th Anniversary Screening of Trembling Before G-d
Sunday, August 21st, 7PM

WOKA invites everyone in the congregation to attend a special "Kol Ami Only" docent-led tour of this incredible exhibit.

Learning what propaganda is and how to counter it is essential in today's information-saturated world. The special exhibition State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda, produced by the  United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, explores how the Nazis used propaganda to win broad voter support in Germany, implement radical programs, and justify war and mass murder.

This most extreme case study emphasizes why the issue of propaganda matters and challenges citizens to actively question, analyze, and seek the truth. A skill that proves to be as vital today as it was in Nazi Germany.

Free Admission. Limited to 20 participants.

Congregation Kol Ami has a vital resource for our community family members. Parenthood is the most challenging job that exists, and allowing a very young child autonomy and a growing sense of a separate self is one of the most complicated tasks for parents. Parents build on their own knowledge and develop their vital role.

Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) can support you as you and your child grow and learn.

Weekly  RIE Certified Parent-Infant GuidanceĀ® classes are for families with children from birth to age two and take place in a small group of parents and babies or toddlers of similar age and stage.

"As the proud father of nine year-old twins, I can honestly say that today I would not be the parent I am without the amazing guidance that Liz Memel and her RIEĀ® Parent - Infant classes provided. As an older parent it became so clear to me that so many people go about the business of raising their children without any clear cut direction or plan. The RIE philosophy provided us with a foundation, with guidance and with wisdom that still works in our parenting today.
We started taking the weekly classes when our twins were 3 months old. The lessons we learned and the skills we mastered help us navigate through the difficult challenges of raising confident, self-reliant and independent children every day. The combination of RIE and Jewish education and values seem to complement one another; together we feel our children are blessed with the understanding of their religion and with our RIE influences. It will change your life. I guarantee it."
- Mendes J. Napoli, Proud RIE Parent

The teacher is Infant - Toddler Specialist Elizabeth Memel, M.A.,  RIE Associate. Shehas been instructing adult education programs for infant caregivers since 1985. Parents are invited to observe a class at no charge. Please go to her website  authenticbabies.com
or call her at  323-651-0022 for more information.
