Tim Hortons Announced as Special Olympics Canada Platinum Sponsor
Special Olympics Canada is pleased to announce Tim Hortons as its newest Platinum National Partner, proudly joining 25 other partners of the Special Olympics Movement in Canada.

Tim Hortons' support will directly benefit Special Olympics Canada's child and youth programs, Active Start and FUNdamentals; in addition, Tim Hortons will serve as an official sponsor of Special Olympics Team Canada as the team begins their journey to the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in March. Tim Hortons will also provide support to Special Olympics twelve Provincial and Territorial Chapters across the country and for the 2018 National Summer Games taking place in Nova Scotia.

Torch Run Ontario Shines on International Stage
The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (OLETR) had 20 members represent the program at the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Conference in Phoenix, Arizona on September 15-17, 2016.
Diamond Award
The OLETR was presented with the Diamond Award for raising in excess of $1,000,000 in 2015. The OLETR announced revenues of $1.9 million and this represents the 8th year in a row the program has exceeded the $1 million mark and won the Diamond Award.

Guardians of the Flame Miners Lamp Escort -Cst. Adam Young, Windsor Police Service
Each year at Conference, a select few delegates are chosen to participate in the highly acclaimed Guardians of the Flame Miners Lamp Honour Guard which is featured in each of the six general sessions throughout the week. Constable Adam Young from the Windsor Police Service was selected to represent Ontario to carry the Miners Lamp into the Opening Ceremonies.

Truck Convoy Raises $84,000
2016 marked the first year the World's Largest Truck Convoy hosted multiple events in Ontario and it was a SUCCESS! In total,

It was a rainy, gloomy, humid, miserable Saturday in Brampton, but that wasn't enough to chase away the radiant smiles and bright spirits of the Special Olympians gathered at the Powerade Centre and the truckers who were there to support them.

The event was the first-ever World's Largest Truck Convoy for Special Olympics to be held in the Greater Toronto Area, run concurrently with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics sponsored by Peel Regional Police. The event, traditionally held only in Paris, Ont., will also be run in its usual location next weekend.
"Drivers wanted to have a closer place to come as opposed to going to Paris," said convoy organizer Don Dunphy. "Peel Police said 'We'll host it and bring it to the GTA'."

It's convoy season in Ontario - and one of the longest standing convoys in southern Ontario rolled down Hwy. 401 this weekend for a good cause.
The 12th annual World's Largest Convoy in support of Special Olympics Ontario kicked off in Paris, Ontario on September 17 and lived up to its reputation as being one of the more heartwarming trucking events of the year.
The convoy is unique from others in that drivers who raise money for Special Olympics Ontario to participate in the convoy, get paired up with a Special Olympics athlete who rides in the truck with them for the 120 km trek from Paris to London, Ontario and back. And from the time the athletes walk through the doors of the Paris Fairgrounds to meet their driver partners, it's all smiles - from the drivers, volunteers and the athletes themselves.
"The truck drivers are so sincere," said Kaitlyn Lindensmith, a district develpoer for Special Olympics Ontario. "As soon as they walk in here they're beaming and they're so excited to be partnered up with an athlete. They come here and they tell us about how they remember the athlete they had ride with them years ago in the convoy."

Correctional Services Update
The most recent class of Correctional Services graduates at the Ontario Correctional Services College (OCSC) have officially set a new Torch Run record for most funds raised with over $6,600! Thank you to all involved for raising much needed funds and awareness for Special Olympics Ontario.
The class raised funds in many different fundraisers including: 5km Torch Run, T-Shirt Sales, NFL Pool and ICIT Hero Bears. We thank OCSC for continually pushing the LETR and Special Olympics events at all intakes and for being true

Great Lakes Police Motorcycle Training Seminar (GLPMTS) Raises $30,000
Kingston Police hosted the GLPMTS over four days in August of this year. The event aimed to enhance the motorcycle riding skills of the law enforcement officers participating, while also allowing the public to see those skills demonstrated.
This year's event took place in the parking lot of the Cataraqui Centre and, like many of the other events Kingston Police have hosted this year as part of their 175th anniversary celebrations, all funds were raised to support a charity of choice. Kingston Police announced that charity as Special Olympics Ontario.
Kingston Police Chief Gilles Larochelle expressed gratitude to all of the volunteers and the sponsors that made the GLPMTS such a success. Funds were raised through donations, generous sponsors and a raffle, which Larochelle pointed out as a major aspect of the fundraising.
"I'll take the opportunity to thank Motorsports Plus Kingston for the motorcycle that they donated. With that motorcycle, we were able to raise some substantial funds again for the Special Olympics," Larochelle said, noting that the event would not have been possible without the community volunteers that stepped up to help organize, specifically those with the Kingston Police Community Volunteers.
Const. Rick Hough, project lead and co-chair of this year's GLPMTS echoed Larochelle's sentiments, also noting his colleagues for their outstanding support.
"I would also like to thank the members of my unit, the core unit and in specific the traffic unit," Hough said.
"Without the help of the officers that we work with on a daily basis, we would not have been able to hold this event, and that's part of everything that we do. It's a team approach, and that team also includes engaging with our community to host events like this to help support organizations like the Special Olympics Ontario."
With that, Kingston Police revealed the giant cheque of $30,000 for Special Olympics Ontario, all of which was raised through the GLPMTS.

Honeymoon Suite Concert Raises Money for LETR and Special Olympics
Rock band Honeymoon Suite hosted a concert on September 24th in Peterborough with funds benefiting local charities including the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
We thank Michael Richardson (Cobourg Police), Tammy Staples (Port Hope Police), Andrew Burdett (Peterborough Police) and Ted Farr (Central East Corrections) for organizing this amazing event for the LETR for Special Olympics!

Special Olympics School Championship Qualifiers
Barrie Police Host Special Olympics Event

About 50 Special Olympics athletes from four Barrie high schools battled it out Friday in the School Championship Track and Field Qualifier.
The athletes were greeted with high fives from student and teacher volunteers, several Barrie Police Officers including Chief of Police Kimberly Greenwood, Deputy Chief Bruce Carlson, Blue the force mascot and Paul Rozario, District Marshall from the Knights of Columbus.
"We are proud sponsors of the Special Olympics," said Rozario. "It's an honour to be here with them. They are all champions."
"I see some phenomenal looking athletes here," said Chief Greenwood before she joined the athletes in their warm-up runs and stretches.
The event was held at St. Peter's Catholic Secondary School on Yonge Street.
It's the first Special Olympics track and field event in Barrie and the second qualifying event this year.
The schools represented were St. Joe's, St. Peter's, Bear Creek and Nouvelle-Alliance.
Students from St. Peter's presented Chief Greenwood with a donation of more than $1,700 for Special Olympics that students raised through dress-down days and popcorn sales.
64 School Championship Qualifiers will take place from October - May across the Province and almost ALL events will be supported/attended by local LETR Officers. View the whole schedule
