On our blog consultant Andrea Pavia of Steer Davies Gleave contemplates the legacy left to planners and to Los Angeles by the late Jon Jerde, architect of Universal CityWalk among many other retail centers. Jerde's application of the place-making method to the shopping mall architectural typology set a model carried out by more contemporary developments like The Americana. Plan for Death with a Tour of Rosedale Cemetery!
APA Los Angeles Presents:
Planning For Death
Saturday, Nov 5
10 AM - 12 PM
Rosedale Cemetery
1831 W. Washington Blvd.
FREE for members & students / $10 non-members
Welcome to Angelus-Rosedale cemetery, one of the oldest and most storied cemeteries in Southern California. The resting place of six former Los Angeles Mayors and others whose names Angelenos with a knowledge of our city's geography should recognize: David Burbank, Harvey H. Wilcox, Frederick T. Woodman.

Join APA for a walking tour of the cemetery by preservationist Laura Meyers, as well as a discussion of the planning aspects of cemeteries, and this cemetery in particular. When, how, and for whom was the cemetery founded? What determined its demographic makeup over the years? Who are some of the famous Angelenos buried at Rosdedale? What role does the cemetery play in the identity of the West Adams neighborhood? How does the cemetery operate in the face of changing economics and trends in the burial of loved ones? What are some of the entitlement processes involved in planning cemeteries? What does the future hold? These and many other questions will be discussed.

The event will wrap up around lunchtime, and those of us who are hungry will head over to Papa Cristo's Greek Restaurant, a mainstay in the neighborhood.

The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Cal Poly Pomona seeks nominations for the 2017 William R. and June Dale Prize for Excellence in Urban and Regional Planning. The Dale Prize recognizes planning excellence, creates dialogue between scholars and practitioners, and enriches the education of planning students. We are looking for a Dale Prize Scholar who will offer insight into this sweep of history - the past and the future of the Southern California suburb.  We are seeking a Dale Prize Practitioner who will provide insights on the dynamics of local and sub-regional governance and suggest ways forward to address challenges associated with immigration, racial and ethnic diversity, economic expansion and workforce development, housing affordability, traffic congestion, and climate change.
