International Airport (MKE) Airfield Update. This newsletter is intended to keep
you up-to-date on airfield construction projects, regular maintenance, and
special events that could impact the standard flow of arriving or
departing air traffic.
Fall is definitely in the air, and before we know it, we will be enjoying our Thanksgiving dinners! As usual for this time of year, runway construction projects are wrapping up.
- Runways 7L/25R and 13/31 will have intermittent closures through late November.
- All other runways are open this time of year. As always, there could be intermittent closures during daytime hours for regular maintenance work. Runways generally remain open during nights and weekends.
- No major runway work is scheduled until next year for Timmerman Airport, the General Aviation reliever airport located on Milwaukee's northwest side.
There will be some special visitors to MKE next month. The world's largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380, will return to MKE for two to three weeks of cold weather/icing testing. The double-decker widebody aircraft is expected to make a number of takeoffs and landings here in December. The smaller Airbus A321 will also visit MKE in December or January for similar testing.
The final Honor Flight for 2016 is scheduled for Saturday, November 5. This will be another great opportunity for our Veterans to visit memorials in Washington, DC. These flights make for a very busy day inside the Airport terminal. We salute these Veterans for their service to our country!
The 128th Air Refueling Wing of the Air National Guard, located on the east side of the airfield along the Airport's border with Cudahy, recently received an Outstanding Unit Award from the U.S. Air Force. The Air Force is also celebrating 60 years of service with
KC-135 Stratotankers!
The 128th has employed several family generations to maintain and fly these aircraft since 1977. In the last year, the KC-135 aircraft based at the 128th have flown 2,800 hours, transporting more than 13 million pounds of fuel and nearly 800,000 pounds of cargo. Although these military aircraft do generate some noise, it's important to note that the 128th employs hundreds of people and provides an important link in air defense.
