FFMI is excited to announce that
Joyce Lee, M.D., M.P.H., is our new Faculty Champion representing the Health IT/Digital Medicine vertical. She joins our current Faculty Champions, Timothy Cornell, M.D. (Diagnostics), Michael Holinstat, Ph.D., FAHA (Therapeutics), and Daniel Orringer, M.D., (Devices).
Dr. Lee is a researcher and designer who is passionate about the notion that human centered design thinking can and will transform the delivery of clinical care and the biomedical research enterprise. As a Faculty Champion, she will collaborate closely with other faculty and leadership to offer expertise in the advancement and commercialization of medical innovation and technologies.
"We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Lee as our FFMI Faculty Health IT Champion," says Kevin Ward, M.D., Fast Forward Medical Innovation Executive Director. "Our Faculty Champions have a deep understanding of patient care challenges, regulatory and market issues in their areas of expertise, as well as the challenges that busy academicians face in making innovation and entrepreneurship natural, but essential, parts of their clinical care and research. Dr Lee will make a wonderful addition to our Faculty Champion team, and we're confident that she'll provide her research colleagues across Michigan Medicine and the University with valuable insights about driving biomedical innovation to market, with the ultimate goal of significantly impacting patients and their families."

Faculty, staff, and students working on medical device technologies, and those interested in learning about development resources and collaboration opportunities, are invited to join Fast Forward Medical Innovation for an exclusive medical device development symposium to learn how U-M is fostering an environment of collaboration to enhance medical device innovation.
The half-day event is designed to educate and inspire faculty, students, and staff on commercialization principles, highlight promising technologies, and open dialogue with executives from major medical device companies and venture capital firms.

U-M Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) will host its annual Celebrate Invention event at the Michigan League Ballroom from 3:00pm-6:00pm.
Celebrate Invention honors U-M inventors and the rich biomedical innovation ecosystem at the University of Michigan. You'll have the chance to network with business, venture, university, and community leaders amidst displays of some of our University's best examples of innovation and entrepreneurship. FFMI's Kevin Ward Among This Year's Dean's Award Recipients

FFMI Executive Director, Kevin Ward, M.D., for receiving an Innovation and Commercialization Award!
"This is a well-deserved honor acknowledging Dr. Ward's outstanding contributions to Michigan Medicine as Executive Director of Fast Forward Medical Innovation (FFMI) and his leadership in developing new technologies to improve emergency medicine and critical care as founding Director of the Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care (MCIRCC)," says Robert Neumar, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine.

 FFM Executive Director, Kevin Ward, M.D., participated in a panel discussion at BioArbor about the latest trends in digital health. The panel talked about how they use artificial intelligence, mobile technologies, and data analytics in their respective fields.
FFMI was part of a panel presentation at the Midwest Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, hosted at
TechTown in Detroit. The panel featured the work of the MedHealth Regional Innovation Cluster of which FFMI is a part; the mission of the Cluster is to convene and connect the region's growing resources and assets related to medtech and Health IT innovation.

The U-M Protein Folding Diseases Initiative Drug Discovery Showcase on Wednesday, October 11, will highlight six projects that focus on the early stages of drug discovery in areas of significant therapeutic opportunity, with the potential to transform human health. The showcase will take place at the Life Sciences Institute Library from 1:00pm-5:00pm.
The showcase is the pre-event to the
PFD Initiative Annual Symposium,
where researchers can exchange the latest research in PFD in a wide range of disease areas. The event will be hosted on Thursday, October 12, in the
Biomedical Science Research Building's Kahn Auditorium from 9:00am-4:30pm, and includes a poster presentation.
Toyota Research Institute (TRI) invites proposals from U-M in the areas of machine intelligence applied to robotics, self-driving cars, and automotive safety. As part of a $22M partnership with U-M announced in 2016, TRI plans to award up to $8 million for new research projects starting on January 1, 2018. The projects will have durations ranging from one year to up to three years. Last year, MTRAC awardee, Kayvan Najarian, Ph.D. (Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics and Emergency Medicine), received funding for his driver alertness project using cardiac monitoring and algorithm development to ensure driver safety.
