Volunteer Spotlight

Since 1997, Kiem Oei has been a generous contributor to our morning coffee as a volunteer staff. In her thoughtful and gentle manner, Kiem engages our members in conversation as she spends a few minutes sitting at each table. Our Center is receptive to the goodness that she brings and the unwavering care that she gives each week.

Thank you, Kiem, for your dedication over the years to the ADC.

September 22nd is Falls Prevention Awareness Day

Our ADC nurse, Laura Cummings, Clinical Manager of Community Health Services at the VNA of Somerset Hills, shares important tips about fall prevention for older adults:

"We frequently are told about the health risks of heart disease, stroke and cancer...but another very serious risk for older adults are injuries related to falls... "

Laughter is the Best Medicine
By Nancy Ryerson, ADC Activities Manager

It is said that laughter is the best medicine. In my life and work as the ADC Activities Manager, I find this true. When you address a daily situation with laughter, you create an atmosphere that lightens the mood and lifts someone's spirits. As Charlie Chaplin said, "A day without laughter is a day wasted." When you are happy and positive it creates a chain reaction among those around you. Laughter is beneficial both physically and psychologically. It lowers your blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, and strengthens the body's ability to fight disease. Go ahead, have a good laugh!

Bingo Playing Found to be Therapeutic for Elders

Bingo, known worldwide for its socialization,
as well as a teaching tool in schools, has large
benefits on the aging mind and for mental health. Studies are finding that Bingo is a good tool for patients with dementia and Parkinson's. Those patients have difficulty with their visual perception and have mental decline.

Researchers discovered that large bingo cards with a high contrast increase playing abilities and thinking skills for these patients.
Julie Winstone, of Southampton University, said, "Any mental or physical activity is good for you but Bingo involves searching for digits which is particularly sensitive to the ageing process. Concentration has been shown to decline with age so Bingo could be helping older people sustain their attention for longer." Bring out those Bingo cards and chips!
