Poor power factor can wreak havoc on power distribution equipment, such as transformers, because of overloading.  When the reactive power is too high, the usable power is lower and makes the transformer work harder to provide the necessary power for a business or industry.  Members on GSA-2 and GSA-3 rates are required to have a power factor of 85% or greater.  When power factor falls below this level, a power factor penalty is incurred on the power bill.  Poor power factor can be corrected by installing the proper levels of capacitance.  Power factor studies are available for commercial and industrial members at no cost through the DREMC/TVA Comprehensive Services Program.  Contact Teresa Sampson at tsampson@dremc.com to start cleaning up your power today!
Broadview Substation to Come Online in October

The new Broadview substation, located in Decherd, is scheduled to be energized at the end of October.

This substation will improve reliability in and around the Tim's Ford Lake area, and will also allow us to pick up extra load from the Lynchburg, Decherd, and Salem areas during certain outages.  This substation will also eliminate the need for some planned outages for maintenance, since we will be able to power those areas from a different location.

DREMC works to continuously improve our system to provide our members with increasingly reliable electricity.  Stay tuned to our "Construction Zone" to keep informed about some of our major infrastructure improvements.

In the Loop:  Broadband Fiber Update

DREMC has contracted with Finley Engineering to design the first route of our Utility fiber backbone from Shelbyville to Columbia, our disaster recovery office. This initial route will connect three of our offices: Shelbyville, Lewisburg, and Columbia. It will also connect four substations, two radio towers, and at least twenty-two devices on our network for better monitoring purposes.

Part of the fiber connection will be used for a distributed automation scheme in Lewisburg, which will allow us to remotely backfeed electricity in several different ways. This will enable us to restore power to some locations more swiftly. We are building the fiber network with excess capacity in hopes that it will be leveraged in the future to expand broadband throughout DREMC's service area.
The University of the South in Sewanee was recently recognized for their participation in TVA's Green Power Switch program.  Congratulations!
