Join Dr. Anthony Trecek-King explore gender labels and "expected behavior" in a concert entitled "We Are." Intermingled with conversations with the audience, this concert will explore the challenges of being a young man in today's world where young men struggle to stay true to themselves while trying to fit into a narrow definition of masculinity. The concert also features our Jr. Men's Ensemble, male singers from Concert Choir and Intermediate Choirs, and their fathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles and other important male figures in their lives. You won't want to miss this event!

NOT YOUR AVERAGE TRAVELOGUE
Dr. Anthony Trecek-King shared pictures and stories with BCC board, staff, friends and donors at The University of Massachusetts Club on September 27. During his recently completed research travels, Anthony had the opportunity to travel to South America, Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Asia where he worked with and met other choirs, educational programs and organizations committed to equity and social justice. Many of the things he learned, he is already incorporating into rehearsals each day.

Audience members wanted to know what was his biggest takeaway. Education, education, education! In Kampala, Uganda one child per family has the chance to go to school and be a part of the African Children's Choir. Through his experience Anthony learned that if you have a roof over your head, clean water and know where your next meal is coming from you are better off than most people in the world. We all should be grateful for what we have.

Special thanks to Neighborhood Health Plan (NHP) for sponsoring the evening. NHP is a not-for-profit health plan with a commitment to promote health equity for members within the diverse communities they serve.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: RANYA VIRK
AND JENNIFER SELVIDGE
With the impending election and the possibility of our first female president, we wanted to put the spotlight on two of our wonderful female alumni who are blazing trails of their own in STEM fields.

Both young women reflect on their experience at BCC as having a positive and influential impact on their development and helping them reach the levels of expertise they have achieved today...even in the face of discrimination.

2014 Alumnus Ranya Virk is currently a senior at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec and majoring in quantitative biology with a minor in computer science. Click here to read Ranya's reflection.

2011 Alumnus Jenny Selvidge is pursuing her PhD in electronic materials at UC Santa Barbara after graduating from MIT with honors. Click here to read Jenny's reflection.
(L-R) Velina, Dimitra, and their family at the public garden in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
BCC FAMILY SPOTLIGHT: BATCHVAROV FAMILY
With a lot of talk about immigrant families in the news, we wanted to shine a spotlight on many of our wonderful families that have an immigration story to tell. Technically we are all immigrants to the US and that is what makes our city and country so amazing and unique. BCC is no different and many of our singers and their families have come to Boston for a new start.

Please read about 7th grade singer Dimitra Batchvarov and her mother Velina, who is originally from Bulgaria. Velina left Bulgaria for a better life and she found it here in Boston.  Dimitra, who loves to sing, wanted to find a community that would embrace and support her.  She found it here at the Boston Children's Chorus!
