Considering Outsourcing Your Development Department?  Here's What You Need to Know.
By: Ana Canning

In the fundraising world, it is well known that the average tenure of a nonprofit fundraiser is 16 months.  At nonprofits with budgets of $1M-$10M, it takes an average of 8-10 months to recruit a director of development.  For many organizations facing this turnover, maintaining relationships and cultivating donors while regularly recruiting and onboarding new fundraisers becomes a challenge.

Our clients frequently ask us for guidance on bringing in new resources to maintain consistency and bring stability to their fundraising operations. In response to the challenges faced by many of our clients, OAI has adapted an "Integrated Partnership Approach" to our work.

Over the last 25 years we have partnered with nonprofits to both develop and then execute fundraising plans as their integrated development staff.  This is an approach that goes well beyond fundraising and can touch all facets of your organization's operations.  Our teams of experienced professionals seamlessly integrate themselves with nonprofits to fundraise, to recruit and strengthen board leadership, to build consensus and direction through new strategies, and to provide executive, fundraising, and financial leadership.  Below are some of the advantages to consider:
  • Integrated partners provide an  immediate staffing solution , without the time, effort and resources required to recruit and train new full-time staff;
  • This partnership approach reduces the risk of costly staff turnover, bringing stability to your fundraising operation;
  • Whether you need one director of development or a whole development team, an integrated development solution provides a  full complement of staffing in place on day one of an assignment;
  • Most embedded fundraising partners already
    have access to research engines and fundraising systems, requiring minimal investment from you; and
  • Integrated partnerships place a  premium on efficiency and focus on priorities and outcomes.
Whether the integrated partnership approach is the right solution for your organization depends on a number of variables.  This could be the right solution for you if:
  • You experience turnover at the leadership level;
  • Your organization is new and is ramping up fundraising operations for the first time; or
  • You have a change in organizational strategy that requires a diversification of revenue streams.
Whatever your needs may be, we would be pleased to explore whether this is the right solution for you!
