Dear Marina Tenant,

The holidays are right around the corner but the weather is still beautiful for boating! That is just one of the reasons we love San Diego. Below is another reason we love San Diego, the Parade of Lights on San Diego Bay!

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is a time-honored holiday tradition brought to San Diego by the boating community. Continuing its long-standing San Diego tradition, the 45th annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights promises to dazzle and entertain bayfront crowds during the evenings of December 11 and 18, 2016. Participants in this year's highly anticipated holiday boat parade will decorate their boats to fit this year's theme, "It Began with a Roar - San Diego Zoo Celebrates 100 Years."
Presented by the Port of San Diego, the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights brings more than 100,000 San Diego residents and visitors to the shores of San Diego Bay each year. The procession of approximately 80 lavishly decorated boats has become one of the most iconic events in the region.

Visit their website here.

The San Diego Sunroad Marina Boat Show will be back on January 26-29, 2017. It's a great place to find your next boat and see all the latest offerings from our local marine vendors and dealers. Come join the fun!

If you have any questions about the marina or suggestions on how we can improve your experience, please call us at (619) 574-0736 or come by the marina office.

Sincerely,

Jim Behun and the Sunroad Resort Marina Staff

The History of Grog and Rum
For centuries, sailors have shaped the cocktail scene. Although their standard fare didn't quite match the modern Old Fashioned, the concoctions sailors developed decades ago influenced the way we currently enjoy alcohol. During the 16th century, sailors from the British Navy were given rations of beer and wine. However, the wine quickly turned to vinegar and the beer spoiled long before ships reached land. The introduction of rum from the Caribbean gave crew access to liquor that wouldn't spoil, but the poor quality of the rum inspired the sailors to spice it to enhance the taste. When the rum rations were reduced in 1740, sailors were given sugar and lime to make up for the decreased quantity; the mixture became known as grog. Sugar and lime not only improved the taste of the drink, but the vitamin C also helped prevent scurvy. Grog was so popular that the drink soon spread beyond the sea to shore and inspired recipes that are still enjoyed today.

How to Hop Down Baja in November

By Capt. Pat Rains

As soon as hurricane season is over, several thousand U.S. recreational boat owners will take their vessel and jump down Baja to pursue bliss: winter cruising season in Mexico. Get ready to break out the flip-flops and make piña coladas!
How can they do this? You might ask. It's different for every boat, but the basics of how it's done are simple.

THREE CROSSINGS
Smaller boats being towed on trailers from San Diego hop onto Mexico Highway 1, which runs the length of Baja California to Cabo San Lucas, at Tijuana. The new border crossing at San Ysidro is finally open, which makes it easier, and drivers will find plenty of Pemex gas stations along the highway. Side roads off Highway 1 take trailerboaters to either L.A. Bay in the Sea of Cortez or Puerto San Carlos on the Pacific side of Baja.
