Up For Adoption: Gracie May
In honor of National Black Dog Day on October 1st and National Pit Bull Awareness Day on October 22nd, we are featuring this beautiful girl, Gracie May. She is an 8 year-old pit bull mix that was rescued from the shelter back in June. She is the best snuggle buddy when you want to relax, and also loves to run around and play. Most everyone loves Halloween. Between the costumes and all the treats you can eat, it's a great time for children, adults and pets. There's ways to ensure your pets stay safe. From dangerous costume materials to toxic foods, it's important to keep your pets out of harm's way.
October is Dedicated to the Welfare and Care of Domestic and Wild Animals
 
October is National Animal Safety and Prevention Month, an entire month dedicated to the welfare of animals, both domestic and wild.
 
National Animal Safety and Prevention Month was created by the PALS Foundation, which was founded to help "people and animals coexist in a way that benefits all nature," according to Dog.com . This special month was " dedicated to promoting the safe practices of handling and caring for both domestic and wild animals." It recognizes the importance of animals and the roles they play in our lives, even to those without pets. It hopes to ensure "that they are treated kindly and with the respect and care they deserve."

Foods to Keep Away from Pets to Ensure Their Health
 
Every year, usually beginning in October due to Halloween and other upcoming holidays, we are reminded once again of toxic foods and pets. It's a good reminder to keep a list handy now and throughout the year.
 
If we let our pets have the run of the house, they would eat anything and everything. However, that would be a very bad idea. Very often the foods we love to eat can be very dangerous to our pets and sometimes can even cause death. So it's best to know what foods are OK and those that are not.
Employee Spotlight: Jovi Mumme, client services specialist

You know that Jovi Mumme loves animals when she talks about the squirrel she and her mother took in when she was a child. The abandoned baby squirrel most likely fell or was pushed out of his nest, but Jovi and her mother nursed him back to health and then released him when he was ready.
 
Jovi began working with animals professionally 7 ½ years ago. As Customer Service Specialist and Guest Services Attendant at Second Home, she does a little bit of everything, but does a lot from working in daycare and helping with the dogs in their suites to helping at the front desk.
 
Having been with the resort almost a year, her favorite thing about the job is "not only when the pets recognize me but when the owners do as well," she said. She especially likes to help put first-time clients at ease about leaving their pets and oftentimes suggests that pet parents bring along their dog's own bed and food to help the pets feel more comfortable.
 
Jovi enjoys being part of the Second Home team. "Everybody here truly cares about the pets," she said. "It's not just a job to them. Everyone is looking out for the best interest of every pet."
