COWBOYS OF THE STOCKYARDS
The Stockyards has seen its share of cowboys and cowgirls in its 150-year history. They've faced grit and grind of the cattle industry, felt the hardness of horns and dirt in the arena. They've made cattle trades, built buildings that stand the test of time and even survived a few brawls in the process. The spirit of the Cowboy continues in the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. And with that we bring you one of today's Cowboy of the Stockyards.
BILLY HUCKABY
Billy, in one word, what kind of cowboy are you?
Rodeo
How are you connected to the Stockyards?
I've announced at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo for the past 20 years, was Director of Marketing for Cowtown Coliseum for seven years and was Executive Director of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame overseeing its opening.
I rode bareback horses and bulls for 15 years, was a member of the Texas Tech rodeo team and qualified for the Texas Pro Rodeo Association Finals a couple of times. The best part was all the great friends I made along the way, some of whom I still see at the Stockyards Championship Rodeo on a regular basis. Medical bills were way more than the winnings. I have a glass eye, artificial shoulder, surgically reconstructed face and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
What is your favorite thing about the Stockyards?
The rich Western history and the opportunity to showcase it to millions of national and international visitors.
Tell us a great Exchange Avenue memory you have.
Just about any Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering makes for a great memory. The chuck wagons, the aroma of the campfires, the Ranch Rodeo and having so much activity and so many people - that's when the Stockyards is the most authentic.

The Military Museum of Fort Worth has been in operation for 8 years, but is a recent addition to the attractions of the Fort Worth Stockyards. We are a non-profit museum with an all-volunteer staff that is dedicated to sharing the stories and sacrifices of men, women and units from the 20th Century with a Texas connection.
To accomplish our mission of preserving this history we depend on a small admission fee, or donations, to stay in operation and keep these stories alive. Veterans and active duty soldiers, and kids 12 and under are always FREE.

WHEN:
Starting Monday, August 21st until early 2020

Access to local businesses will be maintained and the detour route will continue throughout the duration of the North Main Street bridge construction.
The TRV/Panther Island Bridges project is a collaborative effort between the Trinity River Vision Authority, Texas Department of Transportation, City of Fort Worth and North Central Texas Council of Governments. This project will enhance the Trinity River by building three new V-pier bridges on Henderson, North Main and White Settlement. Overall project completion is scheduled in early 2020.
Project information is available online at Panther Island Bridges - Progress in Motion - including real-time camera feeds showing construction progress, information on the innovative bridge design and modern roundabouts, and detour maps.

HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
|
|
The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition
of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.
Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.
Sincerely,
Fort Worth Stockyards
National Historic District
