Has your administration attempted to restrict when you can call the office to have a disruptive student removed?
We've heard from schools where teachers are told only to call if it's a "blood and guts" situation or if students are throwing "large" objects like "backpacks and chairs."
Students throwing "small objects can be intervened in the classroom setting." Let's be clear: the size of the object thrown has nothing to do with it!!! If a student is a danger to him/herself, other students, school property, or YOU, you can have the student removed. If the student is a "disruption of the educational process," you can have the student removed. As the classroom teacher or specialist, YOU get to decide what qualifies as a disruption to YOUR class.
Your KEA bargaining teams have bargained strong, clear language over many years to ensure that you have the right to manage your classroom in a reasonable way and receive "appropriate assistance and support from building administrators." Art IV- Employee Rights pages 19-21 in the 2016-2017 Collective Bargaining Contract.
It is up to you to use this language! If your contractual rights are being violated by administrators who will not remove a disruptive or violent student in a timely manner at your request, let your building rep know immediately so that they can contact KEA. It takes all of us to enforce our contract to keep ourselves and our students safe.
After a several conversations between KEA leadership and the district, Human Resources has assured KEA that KSD has no intention in making it difficult for staff to request resources for their students. It is the stance of the district that they are following the guidelines similar to Tacoma and Shoreline (Both local presidents deny that requests need to go through their districts) to track the resources that come in through Donor's Choose.
The district is in the mindset that very few requests have or will be denied, and that the process is very easy to follow in order to make a request. We will take them at their word. So please go forward and request away! If you are denied access, or find the process cumbersome, please
let us know.
We will collect and present the data to the district!
