We had a wonderful stroll along Boulder Creek this morning. Huge cottonwoods, ice formations, squirrels, lots of ducks, and unfortunately, not a lot else. We didn't even hear or see a woodpecker along this prime habitat! Someone was feeding the ducks down by the library so our Bird of the Day sighting seemed a bit domestic, but it was nice to see the ducks close up (and we got some great pictures).

Wood Duck
The scientific name for a wood duck translates roughly to 'waterfowl in wedding garb' which is fitting for this incredibly colored and patterned bird. Nothing is perfect; just as the crowned crane of Africa has a horrible call so too the wood duck has rather gnarly feet. Usually, wood ducks keep to themselves and it was a bit odd to see it battling for granola with the mallards and American Wigeons. It was quite obvious that the mallards and the woody did not enjoy each other's company.
