Community Success:
Despite the destruction Hurricane Harvey left behind this summer, Houston's resilience rose above it all. Donation after donation, volunteer after volunteer, Energy Institute holds some of our own champions who stepped up to help the city. Ms. De La Rosa and the Travis Manion Foundation teamed up in a blood drive for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center to aid hurricane victims. Energy teachers helped clean up neighborhoods by throwing out debris and other waste from homes. Thank you Energy Community!
The Lightning Volts cohort visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science for an introduction to their project. They also participated in a scavenger hunt at campus to gather content prep for world geography and biology.  The Bayou Bins project will use recycled materials to build an apparatus that cleans Buffalo Bayou water.

Last Wednesday, Energy welcomed our first guest speaker of the year. Mr. Gary Petrae spoke to the 11th grade cohort 5 about how his industry, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), prevents and responds to oil disasters. Mr. Petrae has worked with many organizations through various events, such as working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as a ship captain and participating in the relief for the BP Deepwater Horizon spill. Today, he informs others around the United States about BSEE and its contribution to oil spill relief.

First PTO Meeting of the Year!
Thursday, October 12th, 8:30 am.
Catch up on all the new developments with the your PTO Board, Energy Principal and administration!

The 10th grade Nexus Novas (cohort 4) has been working on team building and design challenges in their Engineering class. They worked in pairs to build a variety of Lego structures and were challenged to explain to another team how to build their design through written or spoken word. Overall, they learned that it is important to be precise and have more than one project resource. Today, the cohort launched its first project, in which they will create a kinetic timeline. We are excited to see what these students will show at Energy!

The cohort 5 juniors have taken a different approach with disaster relief, launching with the driving question, "How can oil companies respond effectively to environmental disasters?" These students are tasked with developing a plan to respond to an oil spill disaster concerning the environment and the public. Cohort 5 will create scientific posters and press statements for a chance to present at the Clean Gulf Conference in December.

This past March, Energy Institute senior, Joshua Watso n earned his Eagle Scout rank and was acknowledged in a formal ceremony on August 13. For his Eagle Scout project, Joshua planted thirty-one trees at Willow Waterhole, a large greenway located here in Houston, Texas. He says that being an Eagle Scout gave him valuable leadership skills which have helped him during school projects and extracurricular activities. Watson plans on starting a pharmaceutical business to provide people with medicine they are unable to afford. When asked what advice he would give to other students, Joshua responded,"be yourself, because there are people who are going to accept you regardless of what your passions are."

Seniors, come listen to a lunch presentation from Texas State University during first half of B-Lunch Wednesday, September 27th.
