A Letter for Leaders in the Virginia Conference of The United Methodist Church

Good morning,

Just as the leaves change from summer to autumn, so does our ever-growing campus. The semester began with plenty of excitement as we proudly welcomed to campus 424 new freshmen as members of the Class of 2021 and an additional 95 transfer students. Our new  University College  (announced during my  State of the University address ) welcomed 33 students to the inaugural online Masters of Business Administration  cohort. An additional 25 new students enrolled in the Evening and Weekend Program, and 25 students are enrolled in the American Culture and Tourism Management program. Total  new student enrollment, at 602 in all programs, is the largest in Virginia Wesleyan University history.

On Founders Day, held on September 7, we dedicated the new Greer Environmental Sciences Center. This 44,000-square-foot facility-surrounded by 145,000 square feet of teaching gardens-features sophisticated learning spaces that embody "science on display" and promote hands-on experiences, interactive learning and interdisciplinary research. The building will provide unprecedented opportunities for students while fostering regional collaboration with organizations like the Virginia Aquarium and the Virginia Institute for Marine Science (VIMS).

Remember to save the date! Our 2018 Robert F. Boyd Institute continuing education seminar speaker will be Dr. Tod Bolsinger. He will join us on campus for the 2018 Boyd Institute from March 19-20. Dr. Bolsinger is the Vice President for Vocation and Formation at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He  is the author of three books, including  Canoeing the Mountain: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory  and the Christianity Today Award of Merit Winner  It Takes a Church to Raise a Christian: How the Community of God Transforms Lives . Registration for the 2018 Boyd Institute will open in January 2018. We look forward to your participation.

Our Homecoming and Family Weekend will be held from October 6-8. Our Homecoming Tailgate on Saturday, October 7, will offer plenty of family-friendly fun with food trucks, live entertainment, a bounce house, athletic events, and much more for our alumni, friends, and family to enjoy. I welcome you all, especially our treasured alumni, to join us as we celebrate on campus.

Sincerely,
Scott D. Miller, Ph.D.
