Lake Park faculty appreciated the occasion to welcome parents and guardians to both campuses last week during the fall parent-teacher conferences. Nearly 5,500 individual appointments, representing more than 1,025 total students, were conducted during the two-day schedule. This level of engagement from families provides a personal, face-to-face opportunity to highlight student achievement. We also recognize that many families who may not have attended still regularly stay engaged through the use of our Home Access Center.

A unique feature was introduced that allowed parents to write letters of recognition for our staff. The brief teacher appreciation card could be submitted anonymously, or parents had the option to add their name and/or their student's name. The theme clearly stated "the influence of a great teacher can never be erased!" Thank you to our parents who took the time to submit over 150 forms that were hand delivered to faculty members. The response was very positive and had a meaningful impact! Parents are encouraged to complete and return these forms at any time during the year or email teachers directly with a note of appreciation.

The start of this week marked another academic milestone when the Illinois State Board of Education released the annual school and district report cards. Presented in both an " At-a-Glance" and interactive format, the report card information collected during the 2015-16 school year includes data from test scores, student and teacher demographics, enrollment, district-level financial information, graduation rates, post-secondary enrollment and some additional new categories. The Interactive Report Card can be viewed by visiting the State Report Card website and entering "Lake Park."

Our school community is always proud to celebrate the academic achievement of our Lancers, and this edition highlights one measure by recognizing students who earned honor roll status from spring semester. We understand that student success is positively influenced by parental involvement as well as by great teachers and staff. Thank you for your commitment to partnering with us and continuing to raise student expectations.

Theatre Department Stages Next Production
The 2016-17 theatre season continues with A Streetcar Named Desire  by Tennessee Williams. The curtain rises on this drama at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 10-12 at the East Campus Dice Auditorium.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for non-Lake Park students; and senior citizens and Lake Park students are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the performance. For more information, contact  [email protected] or (630) 295-5313.

Set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the restless years following WWII, this play is one of America's great drama, challenging the theatre students at Lake Park to explore themes that are far beyond their personal experience. According to theatre director Erik Uppling, "They have met this challenge with dignity and professionalism."
Introducing the East Campus Spirit Rock
First there was the introduction of Lake Park's newest mascot, Legend the Lancer, during this year's Homecoming Pep Rally...

Now the newest addition to East Campus is the arrival of a spirit rock weighing in at 1.5 tons! Similar to the West Campus rock, this school spirit initiative is intended to promote a tradition of team unity and celebrate accomplishments.  Students are encouraged to add their story to the rock.

Thanks to Lancer Nation this week for helping paint the rock and celebrate our very own World Series Champion CUBS!
American English Beatles Tribute Band to Perform
Lake Park is honored to once again partner with American Legion Post 1084 in Roselle to sponsor a "Veterans Benefit Concert" in the West Campus Auditorium tonight, Friday, November 4

To help raise funds to support Veterans programs, Post 1084 will host a concert featuring the popular Beatles tribute band American English.

Pride in Performance Winners Announced
Congratulations to our Pride in Performance winners for the first grading period:

East Campus
Academics: Anthony Slade is an outstanding student who currently earns straight A's with a demanding schedule. He is an engaged learner on a daily basis. When Anthony's classmates have questions, they look to him to answer and he does so with passion.

AcademicsSimran Bhagat is a straight A student with a demanding schedule. She consistently participates and is always willing to assist teachers to increase the understanding of her peers. Simran provides explanations that are clear and to the point.

Achievement: Trevor Johnson experienced some personal adversity during the spring semester that affected his grades. This school year, Trevor is maintaining A's and B's and staff members are proud of his commitment to academics

Activities: Joey Czaja has gone above and beyond this year as a member of Lancer Way. He is earning nearly straight A's while promoting school spirit initiatives by making videos, dressing as the new mascot (Legend the Lancer) and spreading his positive attitude throughout East Campus.

Athletics: Katarzyna Szkaradek has proven to be a standout cross country runner. Although she is only a freshman, Kasia ranks as one of the top Lancer varsity runners and works very hard in training. She also demonstrates a strong work ethic in the classroom by earning A's and B's.

West Campus
Academics: Caroline Leffler works extremely hard in BC Calculus. She wants to understand the material and works hard to do so. Her attitude and work ethic carries over to other students in the class and makes them better as well.

Activities: Brandon Justiniano is an all-around positive young person. In both his words and in his actions, he embodies characteristics of a true Lancer: leadership, character, drive, kindness and motivation. Students look up to him, and he can regularly be seen motivating his classmates to be the best they can be as well.

Athletics: Jennifer Hauser was part of two relay swim teams that broke meet records at the Alburn Relay meet. She also set another meet record at the West Chicago Invite. Ranking third in the State right now in the 50 free, Jen is a big part of the swim program and is a leader in and out of the water.

Holiday Festival of Music Tradition Continues
The schedule of holiday events continues when the Lake Park High School Band and Choir Programs present the annual Holiday Festival of Music on Tuesday, December 6. A crowd favorite and special tradition of the event includes inviting all Lake Park choral alumni to come on stage and sing Handel's "Hallelujah!"

The joint performance begins at 7:00 p.m. in the West Campus Auditorium, and doors open at approximately 6:30 p.m. for first-come, first-served seating. Plan to come early as this event sells out every year!
SAT Exam Preparation Course Available
In preparation for the SAT test dates available next spring for juniors, Lake Park will begin offering a course in January 2017 to develop the study skills to improve SAT scores. In addition to English, reading and mathematics preparation, the course emphasizes test-taking strategies and techniques. Students will gain exposure to SAT testing situations, practice and remediation, and explanations to SAT questions and answer choices.

The Illinois State Board of Education is committed to assessing students through the New SAT . More importantly for our students, the New SAT is universally accepted as a college entrance exam for universities nationwide. Since the New SAT differs from both the previous SAT and the ACT, it is important for students to be prepared and perform their best on this assessment.

Although the College Board provides preparatory materials online, this course is beneficial to students because it provides an authentic and interactive learning experience with detailed class instruction, textbooks and supplemental materials, and an intensive review session prior to the SAT on  April 5, 2017. Students will be engaged in eight sessions and have two additional practice tests for the New SAT.

Students can choose to take this course either on Saturday mornings, or Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Registration before December 5 is $190; registration after is $210. Registrations will be accepted until the January 3, 2017 deadline or until all spots are filled. View the course brochure for additional details and to complete an application.

The Lake Park High School Educational Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships to students whose families have a financial need. If your student wishes to apply for a scholarship, contact Sheila Finstein at (630) 295-5321 or [email protected].
