SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Pauline Nsimba

1) What do you intend to major in when you attend college?  When I attend college, I plan to major in psychology and possibly minor in philosophy.

2) Why is it important to attend college visits?   It is important to attend college visits because you have to make sure you are comfortable with the campus and the area because that will be your home for the next 4+ years.

3) What part of the college application process has been most surprising?  The part of the college application process that is so surprising to me is the amount of time and effort it takes to apply.  Also, it's important to stay ahead of the deadlines.  It will all be worth it in the end.

  1. Show your individuality. You are more than a set of numbers!
  2. Proofread...again & again.  Spell Check cannot catch everything.
  3. Be resourceful! Ask your English teachers for help and get tips from the College and Career Center.

  5. Give yourself time! Don't wait until the last minute.  Well-written essays take time to plan and organize.
  6. Tell a story.  Use details and specific examples to compose an essay that readers will understand.
  7. Be yourself!  Your essay should be natural and geniune.
  8. Accentuate the positive. Demonstrate how you've grown or learned from an experience.
  9. Ask for feedback.  Others can identify mistakes you may have missed.

MONTGOMERY COLLEGE MYTHS

Whether Montgomery College is the only college on your list or one of your options, it's important to understand the facts about MC.  Below are just a few.

MYTH: MC is the only college I can afford.
TRUTH: Some four-year universities (even private ones) may be as affordable as MC for you.

MYTH: If I go to MC, I won't have to study for a college entrance exam.
TRUTH: MC requires "college-ready" scores on either the SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer tests in order to take college-level classes.

MYTH: My GPA is too low to go to any college, except MC
TRUTH: Some four-year colleges accept students with lower GPAs.  MC enrolls many students with competitive GPAs.

MYTH: MC is the only college that is close by.
TRUTH: There are many four-year universities in the area.

MYTH: MC is "thirteenth grade" and is easy.
TRUTH: MC is college. College requires work!

MYTH: It is easy to transfer from MC to any other school (especially the University of Maryland, College Park).
TRUTH: The transfer process is not always as easy as it looks. The GPA you earn at MC will determine your four-year college options.
