Updates to Dialysis Facility Compare: Patient Experience Ratings Now Available
|
On October 28, 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced changes to the Dialysis Facility Compare (DFC) website on Medicare.gov, which provides information about thousands of Medicare-certified dialysis facilities across the country, including how well those centers deliver care to patients.
These changes are in direct response to the important feedback CMS has received from dialysis patients and their caregivers about what is most important to them in selecting their dialysis facility
Since the initial release of the Dialysis Facility Compare website, patients have emphasized in their feedback to CMS that understanding how others like them view a dialysis center- in particular the cleanliness of the facility and how well the staff cares for them- is valuable information when choosing a facility. As a result, visitors to the updated Dialysis Facility Compare website will now be able to see how patients rate their experiences with dialysis facilities.

| Longer Hemodialysis May Offer Survival Benefit |
Extended-hours hemodialysis (HD) is associated with decreased mortality risk relative to conventional HD, according to a new study.
Matthew B. Rivara, MD, of the University of Washington in Seattle, and collaborators compared mortality risk among 1,206 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing thrice-weekly extended-hours HD and 111,707 receiving conventional HD.
Patients treated with extended-hours HD had a 33% lower adjusted risk of death compared with those who had conventional HD, Dr. Rivara and his colleagues reported online ahead of print in

| 5 Tips for Managing Diabetes During the Holidays |

With the upcoming holiday season approaching the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided five tips for managing diabetes while still being able to enjoy the food and festivities.
-
 Stick to your plan - Managing your diabetes during the holidays should be the same as managing it every day, with a few exceptions.
- Stay in control - When you face a spread of delicious holiday food, you'll find healthy choices easier to make if you manage portions.
- Fit in favorites - You can have some of your favorite foods as long as you limit how big the portion is and how often you have it.
- Stay active - Get moving with friends and family, such as taking a walk after a holiday dinner.
- Get enough sleep - When you're sleep deprived, you'll tend to eat more, and prefer high-fat, high-sugar food. Aim for 7 to 8 hours per night to guard against mindless eating.

| Medicare Wants More Patients to Try Dialysis At Home |
About half a million Americans need dialysis, Medicare is now taking steps to make it easier for people to do their own dialysis at home.
That sounds like great news to Dr. Robert LaClair, a nephrologist in Helena, Mont., who has an unusually high percentage of patients who do their dialysis at home: 40 percent versus the national rate of about 10 percent. That's largely because LaClair is no fan of how dialysis has traditionally been done in America. He says his patients do better if they're more active participants in their care, rather than passive receivers.
