Joint Statement on Community Cat Programs



In an effort to support shelter best practices for community cats, Michigan Pet Fund Alliance and Michigan Humane Society have cooperatively developed a JOINT STATEMENT ON COMMUNITY CAT PROGRAMS (available here).

The two organizations strongly support comprehensive lifesaving initiatives for cats, and encourage all animal control and animal protection agencies in Michigan to include community cat programs in their operations.

Michigan shelters and rescue groups were asked to show their support by signing onto the initiative. If your group would like to be added to the list of supporters, please send an email to [email protected] so that we can add your name to our list and  webpage.

Model SNR program right here in Michigan



Macomb County Animal Control





Roseville, MI is receiving national attention for its model  Shelter-Neuter-Return ( SNR) program developed collaboratively by n ational organization  Alley Cat Allies, local private organization  All About  Animals Rescue ,   and  local public shelter Macomb County Animal Control. 

Roseville now contracts its animal control services to Macomb County Animal Control, which requires the cities it serves to allow SNR. All About Animals Rescue provides the SNR services for Macomb County Animal Control, and has been providing SNR services in Roseville since December, when the city council approved the SNR proposal.

Citizen advocacy played a large role in the program's implementation, with concerned residents attending council meetings to speak on behalf of community cats.

One more plug for Community Cats

Even the American Bar Association is taking a position on treatment of community cats. In a recent action, the ABA House of Delegates backed trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR) programs for free-roaming cats.

The approved  Resolution 102B reads: 

"ADOPTED RESOLUTION : RESOLVED, That the American Bar Association urges state, local, territorial, and tribal legislative bodies and governmental agencies to interpret existing laws and  policies, and adopt laws and policies, to allow the implementation and administration of trap-neuter-vaccinate-return programs for community cats within their jurisdictions so as to promote their effective, efficient, and humane management."
