PRESIDENT'S LETTER
NOVEMBER 2016
|

Rosie Phillips

|
Hello fellow Guild members!
November is such a treat here in the low country! Even though we don't experience the "Full Fall" leaf color changes, we do get to enjoy a bit of the magic and beauty here. The beautiful fall colors are such a treat to see and a sign of the year coming to a close and a new one just around the corner. Which means that the December CAG Holiday Party is also just around the corner!
I hope that by now, you all have recovered from any work or despair that our very unfriendly visitor, Hurricane Matthew, may have left behind. I was very sorry to cancel not only the Guild's Board Meeting as we were all preparing for the impact but also the October General Members' Meeting! So many of our members were still in full swing of repair or clean up that I felt it a disservice to you and to our presenter to hold the meeting then. And so, I was very excited to hear that our presenter was available for November to come speak to us! I'm sure you will agree that his technique and style are just as fun as he is to listen to.
And speaking of color! The Guild's Signature Exhibition will be November 7th through the 12th at the Charleston Visitors Center. I would like to congratulate those of you that are in the exhibit! I'm sure it will be another color treat for us! I hope to see many of you at the reception where there will be food, drink and beautiful art plus it's fun to visit with our fellow artists and admire their accomplishments! I would like to thank all the volunteers that come together to make this a successful and fun event for all of us. And while on the topic of exhibitions, I would like to give you a heads up on our Member's Exhibition which will be in early February. More details in this Easel for The Signature Exhibition and details to come to you by eBlast or newsletter for the Members' Exhibition!
We have more good news of grants to announce. The Charleston Artist Guild has received a grant check in the amount of $10,000 from the Ellis Foundation. We thank them for this generous support which allows CAG the funds to provide supplies for our Outreach Programs. Thanks to Steve Jacobs, our Business Manager, for making sure that the Guild has been staying on track as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation! The grant will be put to good use in following the mission of the Guild to promote the practice, teaching and recognition of fine arts in Charleston.
I look forward to seeing you at our next General Meeting on November the 8th, of course after you have voted! But in case you are not able to attend, I and the CAG Board sincerely hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends and that you are enjoying our fall, as it is such a beautiful time of year! But, when is it NOT a beautiful time of year in the Lowcountry? It's time to get back out with your Plein Air supplies or camera and enjoy this color and beauty that is a gift to us all. See you soon!

James Pratt |
We are greatly looking forward to our speaker, James Pratt, who will provide a live demo of his techniques. James is a
Palette Knife Impressionist and
will demonstrate "How to"...mix the colors, how to mix the values, how to pick the paint correctly, how to apply the paint in order to create an "Alla Prima" painting. He will also demonstrate on a larger canvas various strokes/elements that help make up a painting, such as how to paint an Arch, how to paint a pot with flowers, how to create reflections, etc..
James Pratt is a world renowned palette knife artist and is considered as one of the "Modern Masters." James was born in Wellington, New Zealand, moved to Los Angeles in the early 1980's and became a US citizen in 2013. James and his wife, Beverly, are now living in a country home outside of Charleston, SC and when not there, they enjoy spending time at their home in Southern France.
James was introduced to art at young age by his father while sitting on his lap and copying his father's pencil drawings. His life has always revolved around design and creativity. His great grandfather immigrated to New Zealand from England in 1858 and is a published writer and his art hanging in the Museum of Art, Auckland, New Zealand.
James paints with a palette knife which he has been using for over fifteen years. He studied how to paint Alla Prima and finds the knife the best tool to encourage a lively and impressionistic treatment; providing an exciting contrast of scale, adding greatly to the impact of the finished painting.

Mark Horton |
We are most fortunate to have Mark Horton who is internationally known award-winning artist for our November critique.
After graduating from East Carolina University School of Art in 1983, Mark moved to New York City to begin a career in advertising and design carrying with him the dream of someday becoming a painter.
The works of Frederick Church, John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer as well as the romantic landscapes of the Hudson River School painters captivated Mark. Their paintings had a profound effect on his artistic development.
In 2001 Mark Horton devoted himself to painting full-time and moved to Charleston, South Carolina.
Horton is particularly fascinated with the effects of light and weather upon the landscape. He paints beyond a literal interpretation of a scene to portray nature in a way that reflects his own ideas and sensibilities while capturing the spirit, color and changing light of a place.
Please join us for a glass of wine and a painting critique.

We are pleased to announce
Mollie Vardell as the Featured Artist for the month of November. Her exhibit
, "Behind the Garden Gate" is a collection of paintings featuring hidden gardens, gates, fountains and statuary from local and surrounding areas.

Mollie Vardell |
OUR FEATURED ARTIST'S RECEPTION
Date: Friday, NOVEMBER 4th
Time: 5 pm - 8 pm
Place: The Charleston Artist Guild Gallery,160 East Bay Street, downtown Charleston.
Moving to Charleston just over two years ago, Mollie has fallen in love with both the low country and the beautiful homes and gardens of Charleston. Mostly a landscape painter focusing on the marshes and beauty of the low country, Mollie was inspired to create this series after walking down the streets of Charleston, admiring the beautiful homes, window boxes, and ironwork gates with lovely gardens hidden behind.
Mollie has been painting for 14 years in the Delaware and Virginia areas, and just joined the Charleston Artists Guild last October. Although this is her first show in the Charleston area, Vardell's work has been shown in multiple Galleries in Virginia and Delaware and she has participated in many outdoor shows in her career. She also helped to found Great Falls School of Art in Virginia, and was a teacher there for many years.
Vardell states: "The process of painting for me is a journey - one that takes me out of my everyday world and absorbs me in entirety. Everywhere I look outside I see paintings! A fantastic sky, the light on a field, interesting shadow patterns or an idyllic reflection on water, these are what propel me to paint. It is my job as an artist to slow down, to observe, to look harder, always searching for ways to bring this beauty to the surface of my paintings. I paint in oil because of the richness of the color, its density and its ability to add texture and depth to my paintings.

Learn Free Online!
By Debbie Daniels
Director of Publicity & Marketing
Last year, I learned about a website called
www.udemy.com
- an online learning platform where you can sign up for classes free of charge, or more in depth classes that you can pay for. I signed up and paid for a class and went through the online videos whenever I had the time. It was a lot of fun and I learned how use tools in Photoshop that I had never used before. The classes stay on your computer and you can rewind or go forward through the videos whenever you want to. I also watched some free painting demos, some free painting classes, and one on how to organize your time, which I don't do well! There are classes for just about anything on there!
Go to
www.udemy.com
and search for what interests you and you'll see a list of all the classes. Select "free" in the menu to see which ones are free of charge. The videos will stay on your computer for you to watch whenever you choose.
On another note, we are still collecting items for our silent auction to be held at the Isle of Palms Exchange Club on Tuesday, December 13, during our holiday party. We need small items to make up baskets, like notecards, jams, candles, chocolate, tea, coffee, etc. Please let me know if you can help! Email me at
danielsdesigns@gmail.com or call me at 843-814-5585.

Art History Series
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)
By Cisco Lindsey
|
|
John Singer Sargent Self-portrait, 1886 |
|
One of life's most delightful experiences is to come suddenly upon an unexpected scene, such as a beautiful child smiling at you through a car window, or the setting sun bursting through cloud cover and flooding the sky with brilliant reds, or to spot a dear old friend across a crowded room. Such a moment happened to me several years ago when I rounded a corner of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and came face to face with John Singer Sargent's portrait of Madame Virginie Amelie Avegno Gautreau, better known as Madame X. I had recently been reading about Madame X, and had forgotten that this fabulous painting resided at the Met. Unexpectedly encountering Sargent's life-changing creation is an experience I shall never forget.
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was born in Florence to American parents, and spent almost his entire career painting in Europe. At age 28, he had been working for ten years in Paris and had attained great popularity and success. The Salon of 1884 was to be a culmination of his efforts. He had painted a masterpiece which he was perhaps never to surpass. When Portrait de Mme *** was shown at the Salon of 1884 the sexual suggestiveness of her pose and the pale pasty color of her skin instantly caused an uproar and a scandal. As originally exhibited, one strap of her gown had fallen over Gautreau's right shoulder, suggesting the possibility of further exposure.
|

|
Madame X, original |
|
|
The newspapers and the critics had a field day. Commentary about the painting went on for weeks and weeks. "One more struggle," wrote a critic in
Le Figaro
, "and the lady will be free." Crowds thronged the show to see the scandalous painting, paying scant attention to the numerous nudes.
The family of Madame Gautreau was so scandalized that they made plans to take possession of the painting after the show and destroy it. Suspecting this, Sargent removed the painting early and kept it in his studio for thirty years - after repainting the strap to position it over the right shoulder. The scandal engendered by the portrait of Madame Gautreau at the Salon of 1884 contributed to his decision to move to London the following year.
In 1916, after the death of Madame Gautreau, Sargent showed the painting in San Francisco along with other works, after which he offered the Portrait de Mme *** for sale for Æ’1000 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It was at this time that Sargent asked that the title of the painting be changed from Portrait de Mme *** to Madame X. Sargent stated, "I suppose it is the best thing I have done."
John Singer Sargent was an enormous talent with a prodigious output. He created so many wonderful paintings, it is impossible to pick a favorite. I find it sufficient to enjoy his glorious paintings one at a time when serendipity places them in my path, as happened when I visited the Met, and also in 2000 when I came across John Singer Sargent: Portraits of the Wertheimer Family, at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, VA. But that's another story...
