New Child Nutrition Center
Director of Child Nutrition Scott Soiseth visited the construction site for the new Child Nutrition Center last week to check on its progress. The CNC is slated to open this Fall and is located near the Fulkerth Road exit. This facility will include 3 freezers, a dry storage area, packing room, production kitchen, training kitchen, conference room, offices, and much more. Scott is pictured here in front of materials for the new 40 x 70 foot freezer that will hold 150 pallets of frozen food up to 19 feet high! It took three semi-trucks a week to deliver these materials from Mississippi. TUSD has over 90 food service workers and we are excited that this new state of the art facility which will help streamline operations and also alleviate traffic on Colorado Avenue in front of Dutcher Middle School, the current location of Child Nutrition. Great things are happening in TUSD!

Administrator Safety Training
Administrative Council met last Thursday to review Safety/Security Protocols for TUSD. Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Mike Trainor delivered a presentation on best practices for handling a crisis situation. Also reviewed were the TUSD safety and security resources available to all staff such as the #Safety@TUSD Flip Chart, Emergency Phone Tree, Site Comprehensive Safety Plans, and formal partnerships with Turlock Police Department. John C. Maxwell, author of the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership , a focus for TUSD administrators this year, help ed provide a frame of reference for administrators in dealing with future crises:

1. Prepare for Every Possibility.
2. Define Reality.
3. Communicate Often.
4. Learn to Grow.

Pumpkin Harvesting at the TUSD Farm
This past Saturday Farm Manager Damon Coelho, Farm Volunteer Laura Brem, and her daughter Layne, a 3rd grader at Osborn Two-Way Immersion Academy, harvested over 100 pumpkins at the TUSD Farm! Pumpkins will be headed to TUSD CTE Culinary Arts kitchens and our elementary schools for instruction. The THS and PHS Farm Management classes have already started planting a Winter garden which will include broccoli, Swiss chard, kale, peas, sweet potatoes, and much more. Can't wait for the next harvest at the TUSD Farm!
Meet Ruben Modesto
Pitman High School Band Director Ruben Modesto has worked in TUSD for twelve years. He hails from Stockton, CA, and attended the University of Missouri in Kansas City. Ruben oversees the entire band program at PHS which he is very proud of and describes an average day as "controlled chaos" which he wouldn’t want any other way. Away from school, Ruben enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids--Alex, Kalyn, Ava, and Max whose middle name is Skywalker . . . so awesome! He shared that his favorite instrument is the tuba although he is a trumpet player. Ruben is a fan of Miles Davis, Metallica, and Dr. Dre which sounds like an amazing play list! Thank you, Ruben, for helping put the "US" in TUSD.

Whatever happened to . . . Jacob Garcia?
Jacob Garcia graduated from Turlock High School in 2013 as Valedictorian and went on to Arizona State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism in three years and a Master's degree in Mass Communications, his fourth and final year. A week after he graduated, Jacob moved to Medford, Oregon, and began working as a television sports reporter and anchor at NewsWatch 12. He was also offered a media relations position with the New York Yankees, and other TV sports reporting jobs in Texas and Idaho, but nothing combined his desire for a career in journalism and his comfort with the West Coast like the position in Oregon. Jacob plans to stay in Medford for two years and then move on to a bigger market--such as Denver, San Diego or Portland--and has his sights set on someday working as on-air talent at the MLB Network. Jacob credits many TUSD teachers from Osborn's Robert Lopez to Dutcher's Ana Gomez de Santos, to Turlock High's Mary Asgill, Randy Huth, and Ryan Tribble for his success. He also credits his coaches, including Doug Sperry and Rob Mendonca, with helping him learn lessons on the field that directly impacted his life off of it. Jacob has three nuggets of advice he'd like to share with students: For younger students, learn a second language; for older students, take AP classes; for all students, become a good writer. We wish Jacob all the best in his future career endeavors and shout out to his mom, Spanish teacher Jennifer Garcia, at THS!
