Meet Mrs. Alice Ong (Chinese Language & Math Teacher)

Alice is a native of Taiwan.  She has lived in Texas and California for over 30 years.  Alice really enjoys teaching and being with children.  Before being a public-school teacher, she worked as an accountant and often taught Sunday School or heritage school on weekends.  This is her 7 th  year with PVPUSD.  Before she joined PVHS, she served at all three middle schools and two elementary schools in the district.  She is excited to join PVHS and looking forward to meeting more students and parents.

Alice has adult twin sons and one senior boy at Peninsula High School.  All of them have gone through PVPUSD.  She enjoys traveling and visiting museums.  Recently she has discovered a new hobby: watching Chinese drama - the historical fiction/kung fu type.

Academics

Program High light:
AVID
AVID is a program targeting the academic midd le  stu dents. It serves approximately 19% of the PVHS student body.  AVID increases rigor by providing a challenging curriculum, teaching study skills and organization as well as offering academic support. As a result, students in the PVHS AVID program maintain an average GPA of 3.3 with 89% passing all of their classes with C's or better. On average, 46% of AVID seniors complete at least 1 advanced placement class during high school.

AVID students have the opportunity to enroll in some of the most difficult classes, which include honors and Advanced Placement. Concurrently, they enroll in the AVID elective class. During the AVID elective class, which meets every other day on the block schedule, students learn organizational and study skills. In addition, they work on critical thinking skills by learning to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college attainable. At the same time, their self-images improve, and they learn to become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

YEARBOOK

On September 23, the National Scholastic Press Association Awarded All-American with Four Marks of Distinction to Palos Verdes High School Triton Yearbook 2016-2017.

The high school yearbook publication received a 489/500 possible points scoring a 97/100 in photography, 97/100 in thematic design/concept, 95/100 writing/editing, 95/100 art/illustration, 97/100 coverage and 10 extra points for outstanding quality. Seventy two student staff members and leaders contributed to this publication with their original work and with their strong commitment to excellence. The NSPA critique judge stated, "Congratulations on an extraordinary publication! This is a body of work that obviously is the product of hard work as it includes as much student voice as possible. The thematic development and concept of this book are superb and flawless. Thank you for teaching me so much about your school and about collaborative student professionalism. I was pulled into the many profiles and coverage of so many unique events, organizations and clubs. The sports photography is some of the best I have ever seen. Great leads are hard to write. This book consistently started stories with attention grabbing leads. Copy went well below the surface when telling stories. All five senses (and I'm including the smell of ink and glue!) are experienced by the reader in this book. This book does an outstanding job of moving the visual and verbals elements through a really comprehensive book. Again, so exciting--the reader is surprised and excited at every turn, BUT you guys still consistently deliver those subtle verbal elements throughout the book. Amazing!"

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL-BREAST CANCER FUNDRAISER

You probably know that October is breast cancer awareness month...this disease attacks one in eight women.  In years past, the PVHS Girls Volleyball team has raised funds for breast cancer research by holding a "Dig Pink" event at one of our home matches in October.

Our "Dig Pink" match this year will be against Peninsula on Friday, October 6th.  Keep an eye out for team members selling pink breast cancer awareness bracelets during the week of October 2nd.  The snack shack at the game will have pink candies and treats, temporary tattoos, and pink pom poms in addition to regular snack shack offerings.  All proceeds will go directly to support our charity, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.  BCRF is the highest rated breast cancer organization in the US.  Currently, 91 cents of every dollar they spend is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness programs.

The majority of fundraising will be directly through the website:  https://give.bcrfcure.org/pvhsvolleyballdigpink.  PLEASE share this site on your Facebook page or email the link to family and friends and ask them to click on the link and donate.  No donation is too small.

Thank you so much to everyone helping and contributing and please come support our girls on October 6th - bring your friends and family!  Go Sea Kings!

Palos Verdes Performing Arts proudly presents the Tony Award Winning Musical Comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Sept 15th-Oct 1st at the Norris Theatre (27570 Norris Center Dr, Rolling Hills Estates).  This comedy instantly spells F-U-N, as six adults portray a quirky group of adolescent overachievers going head to head with each other in the annual spelling bee championship.  Filled with side-splitting lyrics, the Broadway hit also features special guest spellers from the audience, making each performance unique.
Come cheer on the following PVHS faculty and staff, who will be appearing as guest spellers at the following performances:
  • Fri, Sept 29th at 8pm:  Barbara Ferraro, Teacher
  • Sun, Oct 1st at 2pm:  Keely Hafer, Associate Principal
