I hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween night of trick-or-treating. Also, congrats to the 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs!
I'd like to address a question that was raised regarding the possibility of extending the sidewalks along the south side of 175th Street east of Ridgeland Avenue. The Village currently has a sidewalk on the north side of the roadway, with striping for a crosswalk at Tinley Park High School. Not all students utilize the sidewalk, and many choose to walk along the south side of the pavement.
The Village has had an extension planned for some time along the south side of the street. This was targeted to be completed as part of the Cook County improvement of 175th Street to the west of Ridgeland Avenue. Unfortunately, that project stalled in 2009 due to a lack of funding. It was a Cook County-funded project that was to cost about $6 million.
Mayor Dave Seaman and other Village officials recently met with Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle to get the project back on track, and the Village is currently waiting on Cook County to finalize the review and authorize the Village to proceed on the required engineering and land acquisition.
The area on the south side of 175th Street has some minor ditches that need to be addressed, and the right of way varies. We've recommend that this section of sidewalk be added to the 'gap' plan that is being developed for sidewalks on Oak Park Avenue, Harlem Avenue and 80th Avenue so that if funding becomes available, the sidewalk could be moved forward if the county project again stalls out.
As always, I will keep you up-to-date on this project as it develops.
