Dear Colleague,
I am pretty excited with the beginning of the 1st Study Visit we have organised in London within the Erasmus+ S.T.R.E.E.T. project - whose we are partner - that is going to start on Monday 18 Sept 2017 and last until Friday 22 Sept 2017.
The work was very hard because summarising in 5 days all what a very large city like London has got in place with regard sustainable transport is very complicated.
We worked during Summer time to identify topics, search for material, design itineraries of visits, etc. and we hope the 22 European students that will join us will be happy and satisfied with what they will learn (more details in the article below).
The reason why we decided to hold the Study Visit in this period was due to the fact that
every year between 16-22 September the
European Mobility Week (EMW) takes place.
I thought that could have been an excellent opportunity having the Study Visit held during that week where special events could have been organised in the streets of London and students could take part in some of them.
In Spring 2017 I started to contact relevant bodies in the UK but nobody came back to me. In July I tried again to get in touch with another set of contacts and finally, at the end of August, I received the disappointing reply that London was not going to organise any event during the EMW 2017, apart from one borough that would implement some measures to encourage the use of bicycles.
Well, I must admit, I wouldn't have expected such a disinterest in a popular event that was designed years ago specifically to raise awareness among citizens and very much oriented to show the European population
good examples of Sustainable Mobility.
Within the
S.T.R.E.E.T. project,
EPN Consulting together with the other partners will give their contribution to generate brand-new awareness thanks to the young professionals we intend to qualify as Experts in Sustainable Mobility and Tourism.

Early success in street light charging trials for electric cars

Ringway is collaborating with the London Borough of Hounslow and supply chain partners in a unique trial of both Electric Vehicles and cutting-edge electric charging point technology that uses street lighting columns.
The partnership teamed up with
Ubitricity
, a German company, which pioneers progressive electric charging point systems.
The joint solution developed uses street lighting columns to provide a plug-in system called SimpleSocket. For the trial, 40 units were installed by Ringway across Chiswick and Isleworth in residential streets. Once installed, residents received an email giving the locations of all 40 charging points. The locations were also posted on social media and contained within the Ubitricity app.

Ten Cities entered the final round of the 2017 European Capital of Innovation contest

Ten cities using the most innovative ideas to improve quality of life and to involve citizens in community life have reached the final stage of the European Capital of Innovation Award 2017:
Aarhus (DK),
Berlin (DE),
Copenhagen (DK),
Helsinki (FI),
Nice (FR),
Paris (FR),
Tallinn (EE),
Tampere (FI),
Tel Aviv (IL) and
Toulouse (FR).
The European Capital of Innovation 2017 award and a prize of €1 million to scale up innovation activities will go to the city presenting the best innovation ecosystem, with two runners-up to receive a prize of €100k each. The winners will be announced on 07 November at the Lisbon Web Summit.

Electric Vehicles to achieve cost parity by 2022, but Paris pledges missed

Despite the falling price of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the expanding Renewable Energy sector, key pledges laid out in the Paris Agreement will most likely not be met, according to Ditlev Engel and energy consulting firm DNV GL.
EVs are predicted to drop to the same price as combustion vehicles by 2022, a key trigger that will mean by 2035 half of all passenger vehicles sold globally will be electric, Engel said. "The trends are very clear that the world is electrifying, renewables are taking up more space, we're moving into a world of EVs, but we have to remember we are racing against the clock. It's not enough", said Engel.
On the back of the UN-led Paris Agreement, governments have started announcing policies aimed at reducing climate-harming carbon emissions, such as Britain pledging a ban on new diesel and petrol car sales by 2040.

The Shared Systems revolutionising City Mobility

Shared mobility is a topic that's created a buzz over the last decade, but its underlying concept is well established: "It is really a term used to describe any transportation services that are shared among users", said Tim Frisbie, communications and policy director at the Shared-Use Mobility Center.
That definition covers newer options like bike or car sharing, but it also includes old-school forms of public transportation like railroads. In fact, public transit "is kind of the original form of shared mobility", Frisbie said. "Where shared mobility does really well, it's often in cities that have a really good transit background already... All of these modes team up to enable people to live car-free or car-light lifestyles".
Shared transportation resources certainly have experienced success in densely populated areas, but now more regions with smaller populations are exploring solutions to residents having to drive everywhere.

Driverless Buses are helping elderly Japanese get around

As the annual rice harvest begins this month in the Japanese town of Nishikata, the combines that usually putter along the sleepy roads lining its rice fields are giving way to a vehicle residents have never before seen, a driverless shuttle bus.
Japan is starting to experiment with self-driving buses in rural communities such as Nishikata, 115 km (71 miles) north of the capital, Tokyo, where elderly residents struggle with fewer bus and taxi services as the population ages and shrinks.
The swift advance of autonomous driving technology is prompting cities such as Paris and Singapore to experiment with such services, which could prove crucial in Japan, where populations are not only greying, but declining, in rural areas. Japan could launch self-driving services for remote communities by 2020, if the trials begun this month prove successful

Expert for Sustainable Mobility and Tourism focused on two main fields: Alternative Mobility and Sustainable Tourism, which are
opportunities of economic growth, local development and employment, also according to the new EU policies.
The
#London
Study Visit will last from 18 to 22 Sept 2017
and will be a mix of classroom seminars, lectures and real visits around London to see the best transport solutions for sustainable mobility in the largest European city

).
We are going to teach 22 students from several EU countries how to become Experts in Sustainable Tourism, which solutions regard Transport infrastructure and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) services along with designing proper information campaigns. Last but not least, we will focus on the costs involved in the whole process to provide Sustainable Tourism solutions.

This year's EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK encourages people to use shared forms of transportation such as bicycle and car sharing. Europe is the leader in shared mobility solutions and the value of transactions in shared mobility in Europe was estimated at EUR 5.1 billion in 2015.
It is expected to exceed EUR 100 billion in 2025. Sharing transportation not only helps people save money, but also support the EU's goals of achieving a low-emission economy.
Commissioner Bulc said: "Shared mobility is a smart and innovative emerging model of transportation, with the potential to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads: for example, for each shared car, 15 private cars are off the road. But it's not only about cars; we are witnessing a real spurt of shared bike systems in cities and towns across the EU. We need to ensure that the future of urban mobility is both shared and sustainable".
